Anyone still playing ED with a DK1?

The reason I ask is that I have a DK1 sitting about doing nothing, and a friend mentioned that his son plays ED with a monitor. I offered to lend him the DK1 so his son could get an idea what VR is like, but there's no point lending it to him if it won't work.

The DK1 is actually currently at another friend's house, and has been for around 6 months, so I can't try it myself to check (and besides, I use a DK2 and don't really want to fiddle about changing over).

Even if it does work, I really don't recommend it. The resolution is simply too crap to enjoy the game.

Oh I know the lower resolution/refresh rate and lack of 6 DoF makes it a far inferior experience compared to the DK2, but when I first used it, my mind was still blown. My friend's son hasn't tried any VR, so I would think he'll have the same experience.

I just want to give him a taster of what VR is like. If he enjoys it, he can save up for a CV1/Vive and have his mind blown all over again.

Shizuka - I don't know whether the DK1 does or doesn't work with the current version of ED, which is why I asked. As gapper4 said, it's not really worth buying a DK1 (at least for ED), because it's a bit too limited to use permanently. Even the DK2 doesn't really have sufficient resolution - particularly with Horizons and the SRV because some of the cockpit displays are too small to read comfortably.

IMO, you'd be better off trying to locate a used DK2. Lots of owners are selling them to fund their purchase of a CV1.

My DK1 still works great with ED + Horizons natively. I tried it the other day.

I'm using SDK 0.5.0.1 and Configuration utility 1.6 in Windows 10

I'm not using Steam VR or anything like that, I just plug it in and set the display mode to extended using the configuration util.

Thanks ZeeWolf, that was the confirmation I was looking for.

I just set up my DK1 using the latest (0.8) SDK and Steam VR and it works fine, except for some reason when I look straight up, I'm clipping though something. Its not too bad, though, and it otherwise works great. I was about to make a thread about it.

Do you have a DK2?

If not (and assuming you aren't wedded to another title that needs the latest SDK for your old DK1) you should be able to get an older version of the SDK from here:

https://developer.oculus.com/downloads/

Then you can use your DK1 natively and not worry about Steam VR. That might give you a slight performance increase and possibly solve the clipping?
