Anyone try pirating the NPCs?

So, Has anyone actually been bold enough to prey upon the NPCs? I've run into a few Lakons out in the black, and it seems like a pretty tempting target. Do you get any sweet cargo taking out those heavy babies? Is it enough to make a profit and justify the risk?

Is it better to pay off the bounty or to jump system?

The wanted Lakons you find floating around in signal areas are perfectly killable, and usually carry heaps of liquor and sometimes other goodies.

They do have a little nasty surprise though. If you engage one, expect lots of company very soon ;)

Liquor? Really?

So if you turn NPC pirate, you can expect a bounty of rum and a feiry death?

Yup, you can find some good targets too. I came across a lakon full of gold once, but it had an Eagle escort. I'm gonna need a wingman for that one.

once i found 3 lakons with 3 eagles each as escort, i accidently scanned the wrong ship = the eagle, and guess what the pilot did? he escaped :p
so my tactic was/is:
scan each eagle, let it evade, follow and kill it. rinse and repeat, until a lakon doesnt have anymore escorts, then target the cargo-hatch to let it lose some canisters, then target the power-plant to explode it, dropping some more cans.
when you decide to scoop up the goods, make sure you do it as quick as possible, since the canisters have a limited lifetime.

concerning the bounty: its not worth the risk if it (a lakon) only got liquors or other "worthless" cargo. at personal weapons or gold, it justifies the risk/effort. dont forget that sometimes after you attack a lakon (w/o escort) some reinforcements will appear, thats what made me poop my pants the first time when i thought "oh nice, a lakon without any protectors, ima kill it for breakfast". i was dead wrong - literally. arrrrrrgh

I found a single, unescorted, "wanted" Lacon at the unidentified signal in Asellus Primus. Took him out with a Cobra and gained about 25-30 liquor and a 1050 cr bounty payment. No hidden escort appeared, so I may have been lucky.

I found a Lakon at an Unidentified Signal Source banging on about wanting to make trades for good quality "Cha" but he wasn't wanted.

He was pretty desperate to get his hands on the stuff though, judging from the comms.

Its possible for a small fleet of commanders to jump in to some of the unidentified signal source areas and take out all the NPC ships and for all fleet members to make a large profit.

Warning my other sig is on my visitor page , check the links for more information about me and some of my friends.

If you have stolen Tea, he/she will buy it at full market prices by flying close to the lakon. I've let pirates attack him to the point that he dumps his cargo for me to scoop up and sell back to him ;)

Which system was that?

Yes, I've had a go at the NPCs out there with varying degrees of success... Be careful with seemingly solo flying Lakons as they often have a bunch of friends running silent ready to jump you.

Weird, just popped out of this very thing and saw this thread. Pirating NPC's in the right area is a lot of fun. Lakons dropping tea adds the pleasure by trying to scoop them up as fast as possible :D

Not as much credits/minute but, a lot of fun. Bad part is getting back to a station without getting someone looking for bountys.

Even more weird is the pirates who attack woefully unprotected PCs 'for the challenge' but avoid NPC traders, despite them being escorted and more difficult to deal with.

That is awesome...

I'm looking forward to the beta, I want to have a few friends of mine to stick up a few lakon's... have one or two of us to hold off escorts while a third blasts the belly of the beast and loads up on cargo. Maybe two eagles and a cobra?
