Hardware & Technical Anyone using a PS4 pad with good effect?

Been using mouse/ keyboard for a while but since I got myself a PS4 I have been trying out various PC games using the lovely dual shock PS4 controller.

Had a quick game of ED with it last night, seems like it could work very well, I just need to work out ways of getting the forward/ reverse thrust working in a way that suits me, oh and my single gimbal mounted beam laser on my viper doesn't seem to work, I got ambushed by a cobra and the beam laser just didn't seem to want to fire (no it wasn't overheated, yes I had weapons pips maximum) wondering if it's a control pad issue with firing guns?

Anyway, I don't have the money for a HOTAS set up of any sort so the PS4 pad will have to suffice, just wondered if anyone else has used one with any success?

yeah! my friend CMDR CHADDYMANZ uses a ps4 pad and a peace of software that recognises the ps4 pad as an Xbox pad, and he's very good with it :D

Oh cool I will add him, us PS4 pad users should stick together lol

Yeah I have the pad working perfectly with my laptop i Just need practice with mapping controls to it to make ED easier to play. I have succesfully launched from a station, jumped to another system and landed at a new station using it so I'm well on the way, just need lots of practice...

I've been using the PS4 pad since Beta 2. No issues, love using it and find the mapped buttons easy to use. the trackpad also helps with moving the cursor through the menus etc. i'm using dual gimballed beam lasers on Primary Fire and Dual gimballed autocannons on secondary fire and have had no issues (acutally the only issue i have is when the target is too high for secondary weapons (as they are mounted under the nose) or when its too low for primary weapons and i cant get a good lock)

I was trying a PS2 Dual Shock but it was just too sensitive on the joysticks during combat. Otherwise the buttons and layout etc was great. I believe that the PS3 and PS4 pads are much less sensitive than the older ones, so they're probably pretty good for the game.

I'm using a DS4 in Gamma with DS4Windows but I'm not getting Elite to read either the trackpad (movements or buttons) or the Playstation button which I assigned as L for landing gear, simply won't read it :(

Fixed it myself, was using it with a USB cable initially but apparently trackpad and other buttons don't work that way, using a dongle and trackpad/buttons work fine in game :)

Is there a thread with how to set up a PS3 or PS4 controller as the gamepad for ED, right from first principals please?

+1 - I have a HOTAS on the main PC but have to be away over Xmas and if my oldish Alienware laptop can actually run Elite this looks like a good portable compromise... any advice would be very gratefully received

I think I'm going to try to set up a PS4 controller on my PC to play Elite with and see if I like it. Any tips on button mapping?

pretty much the default is pretty good. I put thrusters left and right on the analogue sticks button L3 + R3. Also added supercruise to Square Up (hyper drive is Square down).

Most importantly I set the thottle up and down to X +Square (down) and Circle + Triangle (Up). Which sounds weird but try holding one and pushing the other and it feels awesome without being too easy to hit by mistake. Then set the Forward thrust axis to R2 Analogue trigger as a gas pedel (you need to set it to forward and backward axis or it wont work right, due to the way the trigger is set up, with that setting on it works like a charm) Left trigger is set to thrust reverse to brake and back up. Fire weapons is set to L1 and L2 Bumper.

So far this is the best settings i can come up with. Highly recommend bluetooth chat pad (3rd party product, has extra battery in it) that helps with keyboard commands and typing. Opens all possibilities on the pad and leaves keyboard and mouse redundant :)

Have fun, good luck commander!
