anyone using a R9 290 with their rift?

as title says,

I am in the market for new gpu, my 6990 is being retired due to the cf problems and lack of driver support from amd.

I was thinking of getting a 290, will it be able to run ED with the rift at the 75 fps required for the rift ?

cheers

Hi, yes I have a R9 290 tri x from sapphire . My settings are all on low with bloom on and shadows to medium. I get pretty solid performance but do get some judder on asteroid fields in main game. I think it's more of a optimisation on the developers. My advice would be a gtx 970 and overclock it.

Cheers

Shadows make the game amazing so you really got to have them on medium.

to be honest I got a great deal on a second hand one, picking it up tonight. time to chuck my old 6990 in the bin lol

I plan to put a waterblock on it and overclock it, from what I read there is not much difference between a 290 and a 970.

I use a 290x, performance is fine everywhere except asteroid fields (where it's almost unplayable unless I dial everything to minimum)

I do get a slight "hang" when entering the hyperspace tunnel, seemingly while textures load. I've not noticed it on anyone else's youtube vids. It's a bit of a shame as hyperspace is such a fabulous effect with the Rift, but it doesn't affect actual gameplay obviously.

I'm using a R9 280X from toxic (OC) and I run everything in high and I have some lag.
To be more specific, during the beta 3 I had no lag whatsoever, the game was very smooth and 60FPS all the time (even in asteroid field). Since the gamma, I have some FPS drop during supercruise, but its pretty random.

So the 290 should be enough.

There is not so much difference between the 290x and the 970 unless the power consumption, the noise and maybe some % of perf.. (970 little bit less performant than the 290x, but its very small so it doesn't really matter).

Ok it's a very good GPU and is pretty close to a 970. Funny thing is I get flawless performance in training asteroid field but in main game I get slight judder but only when I look in a certain direction or if I have the main plain field in my view.

R9 290 will defo last till cv1 comes out. Then I will go SLI or crossfire as we are going to need it. :)

When you say running fine , what settings do you have on and do u drop under 75 fps ever ? As for me that is what should be described as running fine. If it's drops from time to time then it's not running fine. Sorry to be like this but I keep hearing people say there's run so well but I really can't see how it is. Cheers

I've been using a R9 280X all was running smooth 70/73fps on ultra until B3.9, since then performance has dropped badly and get lots of stutter + double image when turning. Gamma 1.02 hasn't made any difference even though I'm running in extended and all settings on low.

same issue like you, except i was running with a 280x, than 3.9, so i changed to a 290x ( i have lots of vid card from my crypto mining days ) and same jitter with my 290x since 3.9

next step will be to sli 2 280x, but i read that sli doesn`t really work with the rift.

let's hope next few release will be better for us dk2 users.
