Anything I'm mssing (Points of Interest)

So in my ongoing efforts to get in good with the Sirius Corporation and unlock the system (and get to the Engineer) I took a mission to scan a Data Point in a point of interest...

Please tell me this doesn't mean I've signed up to flying around a planet landing at random blue dots until one happens to give me the data point I need? Does the mission send me a message when I'm near the right one? Or am I going to be dune-buggying over this dirt ball until the 2 days I have left on the timer run out or I get REALLY lucky.

If I abandon the mission now how much of a hit am I going to take on my faction rep? Will it be worse than the hit I'll take for failing to find the thing?

Am I missing something obvious?

Help me commanders please.

You don't lose a great deal of rep for dropping one mission these days, so if it's taking too long, just dump and take a couple more. It might be a mission with a procedurally generated data point. If so they're dead easy - just fly to the planet / moon in question (or scan the nav beacon / use an advanced discovery scanner to find the body if you don't already know it). If you look in the Nav panel when you get close to the planet you'll see a mission specific objective - Search Zone (or some such). Just head for that. It'll move a few times as you get close to it, but eventually will resolve into a little settlement with a datapoint.

It's just saying "It's on Planet Dirtball" or whatever it's called. I could pop back and scan the Nav Beacon and see if it gives me more info.

I mean I'm enjoying the dirt buggying, but as my Federal Gunship has no cargo bay everytime I find a stash of goodies instead of my target I get a bit down. All those lovely goodies.

(It took me a while to get into using the SRV, with my left handed weird keyboard setup I generally take a while to use new stuff until I can map out new keys).

It sounds like you're good to go already then - you should see a Mission Objective search zone thing in your Nav Panel when you get within a couple of thousand k of the planet.

Yeah - the scan missions actually spawn a destination that resolves on planet surface when you are within 0.2 - 0.5Ls of a planet, so you wont have to fly over planet dropping into the random POI locations.

It will move about a bit as you get closer, but you will never lose it as a targetable destination once you are at the planet in question.

Missions will be slow for unlocking Sirius though unless you get easy to do ones. Trading will also raise your standing with them, it kinda depends how much cargo space you have but I went mining for three hours in a Cutter, turned up with millions of profit in metals and got aligned instantly, trade (if your cargo space is big enough) should be even faster. Just find out what sells well and then find somewhere that sells it.

Problem is I'm currently flying my Federal Gunship. I have occasionally swapped out the fighter bay for a 64 ton cargo bay.

I should probably just do some bounty hunting.

Yeah there's actually loads of ways of getting on their good side, shouldn't take too long anyway but searching for POI's is probably one of the longest. Good luck.
