Anything the Diamondback Scout actually excels at in particular?

I developed a healthy disdain for the DbS after taking one to Sgr A and back in 3301 and was glad to be rid of the ship, never bothering with it since.

It's funny, but I actually rather like its compact, somewhat insectoid, utilitarian aesthetic, and I think it handles well enough for my standards, preferring to pilot small, agile ships. Its dreadful fuel scooping speed – the worst in the entire game – is the main thing that made using it a chore when returning from Sgr A.

Anyway, I was thinking it was time for a new ship, and I had an idea for loosely basing it on The Tramp, Charlie Chaplin's famous character role, and naming the ship The Chaplin in his honor. It took a little while milling around in the back of my mind, but naturally I eventually thought of the DbS.

Problem is, I don't really know how I could effectively make use of the ship in the game.

Well, maybe you lot could provide some further inspiration.

Cheers.

I love my DbS (Kiitty's Got Claws) for use in combat zones, as it's small, nimble, lovely weapon convergence, and reasonable survivability for a small ship. Ignore cargo, fuel scoop, and add HRPs.

I find it great fun, it runs very cool, with a cheap rebuy, but I'd never use a DbS for exploration. The DbX is still my go-to ship for any form of exploration - imho the best ship in the game for exploration.

ymmv

I remember reading that their cool running makes them great at being "snipers" as they can run silent and break lock? No personal experience with that though

Yep, stealth... silent running for longer periods of time since they run so cool normally. Good ships to move criminal passengers and greatly reduce the chances of getting scanned. I'm building one just for that.

Mine is an Ice Cold, Brick Tanked, Speed Demon equipped with DEADLY Modular destruction Cannons!!!

just sayin... I flipping Love My WASP!!!

BOOST @ 670
780 HP
Boosts while Firing @ 19% Heat
Silent Running for 13 minutes before 90% heat, while flying in the blue

Being awesome

Actually I think it's the coldest ship in the game.

Rev cascade rails and corrosive flak DBS was my main ship for months. Can reliably stick on one conda in 1v1 PVE. One of the smallest non-winged shape to easily fly FA off in the outer trenches of a coriolis without poledancing.

It's an excellent light fighter.

Turns better than all smalls except the Eagle and Vulture, has better shields/armor than any of the smalls except the Courier and Vulture (Viper 4 turns like crap, so it doesn't count), better jump range than most of them too (may actually be the best).

All in all, it's a great choice for people moving from the Viper 3/Cobra 3 on the way to the Vulture.

Thanks for the invitation. I already love the DBX, time to take another look at this ship as I guess they have a few things in common...

Who? What? :D

It's kind of ironic that you should say that. I'm not particularly a fan of the DbE, but caring for it more than slugging around in an Anaconda, I do appreciate its capability for exploration on the fringes of the galaxy, comparatively speaking. The ship doesn't see much use from me though.

Well either way, some good motivation in this thread so far. A scrappy little kit of a ship does seem rather apt to me. :)

Cheers, Commanders.

My favorite ships to pilot and use in the game are the Vulture and Eagle, followed probably by the Cobra Mk III and the Dolphin for basic exploration and VIP passenger mission multirole, respectively.

I was a huge fan of the Cobra Mk III back in 3301 as a rares rum runner in Open, but that ship has more or less sailed off into the sunset.

It should follow that the DbS would be high up on my list, but I haven't been able to incorporate it into my general play style very effectively, so looking for a different angle of approach here.

Cheers.

The DBX is actually one of my all time favorite explorer ships. I love pretty much all of it, even the slow scooping abilities that now, with the new FSS, is no issue anymore as I just start scanning while scooping. But I really didn't want to hijack this thread, so I rather shut up here. I just seem to recall that Ziljan was using the DBS as a formidable combat ship back in the days... Only caveats to me could be that it's probably too nervous for my outdated, subpar controllers and my stubborn FA Off always obsession.

For me, the FSS just doesn't feel like "exploration" so I tend to avoid it. Strange, I know, as it's a rather compulsory element, but it is what it is. No need to muck up this thread with that old debate though. :)

I'm one who cares more for fuel scooping on the flyby and skilled first person gameplay – of course it's a relative term for me and my approach to the game, not meaning to denigrate others.

...

Actually – and maybe this could help others struggling with the FSS gameplay – I've had more fun using it selectively and finding out the characteristics of systems before resorting to it. Getting out to about 30C while having a look around beforehand tends to give a pretty good vantage point as well. There's less to go on as systems are more obfuscated, but the act of unraveling them seems more rewarding.

But I digress... :)

Cheers, Commander.

Watch this...Be amazed, and have a giggle about how this CMDR like to "wined people up". Then...enjoy your new ship.

Nice perspective there, and dig the approach. Seems a bit contrived to me, but through no particular fault of its own. Well, when deep in the woods, pull out the iron and cut through the jungle, I suppose. :)

What I mean to say, and I don't want to come across as a donkey... skill is a relative term. What I'm aiming to fall back on is the worth or the ship itself.

...

Sorry, didn't mean to be dismissive here. I'm just a bit jaded after years of playing the game and giving up the ghost to be an explorer over pedaling gameplay progression on its terms.

Thanks for the video! :)

If you plan to silent run in combat... Well good luck since night vision rendered combat silent running completely USELESS :/ I used to have a combat silent runner, but now this ship is catching dust in a hangar. Pity.

A level, contextual playing field seems like something that's slipped away since the game's release. I'm not sure if it's even in consideration any more. To me, ideally, other players are just part of the environment, yet that doesn't seem to be something Frontier are striving for here. Rather, the meta progression seems to be what constitutes meaningful gameplay.

Sorry, getting a bit off topic here.

Too many things changed since the DBS got introduced. It used to be a quite useful low cost ship option - rares runs, PvP combat and avoidance and PvE combat.
Now it is just a fun to fly ship with an extremely low rebuy cost.

I really like the DBS, but only because nostalgia. Currently using anything below medium sized ships is just for fun and otherwise almost pointless.

You're bringing me down. Seemed like I was in for a bit of a nice scrapper, but then, I tend to play as a survivalist, so losing ships on the whim of a cheap rebuy doesn't sit well with me anyway. Hmm...
