(App) Testing Lossless Scaling 2.9's new X3 frame generation update.

Have seen this update to an older app is getting some interest online with claims of 'tripling your frame rate' using frame generation with can be applied to any game/application that is being played windowed or border less windowed. I have tested it (it's pretty cheap on Steam) and while not blown away by it's abilities as much as some of the reviews online suggests, it certainly does something. (It also features a set of upscaling options that can be used, but I haven't been focused on them here)

The blurb on X3 from the developers...
- Introducing the X3 frame generation mode. LSFG 2.1 can now generate two intermediate frames, effectively tripling the frame rate.

X3 has increased GPU load by approximately 1.7 times compared to X2 mode. At the same time, LSFG 2.1 Performance and LSFG 1.1 have been optimized to be 20% faster in X2 mode compared to the previous version.

It has been tested that X3 mode does not cause any additional latency compared to X2. Latency is affected by the base frame rate and when the GPU is fully utilized. For the best experience in both image smoothness and latency, it is recommended to lock the game frame rate at 1/3 of the monitor's refresh rate in X3 mode.

The minimum recommended base frame rate remains the same as for X2 mode at 30 FPS for 1080p and 40 FPS for 1440p, respectively.

My feelings are that it will be suitable on a case by case basis depending on application, system and personal preferences. It unsurprisingly comes with some drawbacks, the latency being the main one for me even when locking the game frame rate at the suggested settings. Apparently this is mitigated by using a controller over mouse and keyboard somewhat, but I haven't tested this my self.

Even though I'm not entirely convinced by it's effectiveness, I thought I would put it forward to the community. I'm actually quite interested to hear what the more tech savvy have to say about, even if deemed entirely useless. I have to be honest I'm not even sure I have the set up to be most effective either.

I have recorded some videos, however due to the nature of the app it's effects can't be recorded by the usual screen capture software. So I have had to record on my phone which in itself is limited to 60fps. In the tests I have set ED's options to ultra with 2.0 scaling at 1440p which normally gives me ~48fps, but I have limited the frame rate in game to 30 fps. There are two videos, one with X3 enabled and one without, I haven't labeled them to see if people can tell the difference. With it enabled the app claimed to be outputting at ~90fps, again not caught very well on a phone recording at 60fps. I also can't play the game and record at the same time. Not ideal I know, but this is the best example I can give with out anyone having to purchase the software. (It is on Steam though so the 2 hour refund window does apply if you do want to test it)

The tests..

There is a video guide here with some tips if anyone is having a go..

and the app itself..
