Hardware & Technical AppData Folder size

OS Windows 10 Pro.

The folder Users>Username>AppData>Local>Frontier_Developments>Products> is approximately 15GB in size.

I have just reinstalled Elite Dangerous Horizons after a long lay off and the above folder appears to contain the program executables. Is this correct?

I always thought the standard for Microsoft was to install programs in Program files or Program Files(x86) but this appears to be not the case for Elite Dangerous.. Can anyone throw some light on why this is so?
15 GB appears somewhat excessive even for such a large complex game. The windows OS which is not known for efficient coding takes less than 20 GB.

I'd be grateful for any info or links I could follow to get more understanding of this.

Thanks for any help.

Mine is about 1.5MB.
I would say the file path on initial installation was wrong.

It was probably the installer used, standalone/steam/oculus, having the wrong pre-set for the express install? Just uninstall and reinstall to your preferred location.
I've had to reinstall a couple of times an thats never happened for me.

The launcher will, by default, put the game installation proper in that location. That way, it will always have full permissions instead of popping up a UAC dialog for each update, and the game itself will not get "magical" privileges by Windows (application installed inside the "Program Files" locations will implicitly be able to access some functionality like input injection).

You can opt to put the game installation in another location by installing the launcher in a "non-magical" location, e.g. on another drive, and then moving the Products folder into that location for a structure like this:
