There just isn't enough diversity in Odyssey suits. You basically have one suit for combat, one suit for exploration, and one suit for Commerce.
If we only had one combat ship, one trade ship, and one exploration ship, people would be bored out of their minds!
That said, I get why they have made all the alternative suit designs cosmetic. Got to make money, after all. That said, why not apply the pre-built approach here? Every 3 months or so, you could release a new suit variation, not only with different cosmetics, but also with a different function.
For example, the suit with cowboy hat could be the Gunslinger suit. It could allow you to dual wield two side arms at once, with greater accuracy and stability on both, and perhaps a special accuracy module, which allows people to Auto Target headshots for a short time, with a cool down. This could provide a true alternative to just using an executioner, as you could Fire Two Shots almost simultaneously, breaking Shields and killing armor at the same time!
The Nomad suit, by contrast, might have some form of alternative exobiology layout, perhaps allowing it to boost sideways across the landscape, but having a shorter range on the scanning mode.
And the mining suit might have an enhanced flashlight array, lighting things up further away and in all directions, as well as having more durability than the Maverick suit.
Buying the pre-built would give you a version that is pre-engineered to grade five, and maybe includes some helpful engineering effects, while leaving some open for player choice as well. They would also include a variety of color options, so that even after the suit goes on sale to the public in 3 months, you would still have your cosmetics.
Of course, to really make some worthwhile, there would need to be some expansion to Odyssey content. New exploration content, for example, like cave systems. While you could not include these as a procedurally generated aspect of the planet itself, I don't see any reason why you couldn't just punch a hole through the planet's surface, and then procedurally generate the cave system beneath independently. It would basically just be made with the same approach they used to place buildings into the terrain.
New Odyssey styles of combat would also be nice. Additional types of Sentry drones, for example. We have long seen the advertisement for Achilles robots; you could add swarms of Achilles robots attacking you instead of people, allowing you to have large numbers of mooks that you could mow down and not have it feel overly gratuitous. Pirate factions could maybe have some sort of animal, a nice lead in to having the big game hunting that braben alluded to all those years ago!
And all of this should interact with power play, of course. Honestly, the addition of power play has made me really reevaluate Odyssey content, made it far more appealing than before, by connecting it with other things. I would happily play more of it if I were given the opportunity.
