I'm a cider man myself, but I tried lager the other day and my goodness it was bitter.

Still, that was one brand out of thousands, and was specifically lager. (Is lager actually beer?)

I do enjoy trying new things though so was wondering if all beers are bitter. I genuinely do not know because I've always had cider at the weekend, which as I'm sure you know is a very sweet drink.

Cheers.

There are sweet beers, but the term "beer" covers a wide range of drinks.

A beer is
a carbonated nonalcoholic or a fermented slightly alcoholic beverage with flavoring from roots or other plant parts

So a lager is a beer, as are those sweet flavored beer cocktails that you find in the refrigerated section of the local grocery store.

Cider can be considered a beer as well.

Well that's okay then. I'm planning on trying more, in small doses of course. I have no more than three UK units a week, usually less. I know alcohol is inherently a bad thing but I've never been so drunk that I lost my mind. A little sluggish and giggly, sure, but that's it. I consider myself a very responsible drinker. Furthermore, I only drink at home.

Cider = PWAHAHAHAHA....

Tell me do you stand in fields for hours on end and scare the birds away?

I mean I loook like a scarecrow!

But to be fair farming work is actually my only real skill! :p

Your looks depend on how many beers the man consumed 😂

To answer your question yes most beers are bitter, there are rare beers more in the sweet direction, but not very popular.

Noted. I think I'll leave trying them to when I'm not paying... ;)

Bitter = shaky grounds with me. It's... Okay. But I do not really enjoy a bitter taste, which is evident in my love of cider.

Obligatory dumb question.

I'm guessing it has a sweet flavour as hinted by the name?

yes - along with many other "stouts" there is a high residual sugar content giving a sweet taste, not as sweet as milk-stout (as per Ena Sharples).

Stouts were a favoured choice of ladies back in the olde days of pubs restricting them to "the snug".

Mackeson's! Lovely stuff.

I wasn't going to do more than just throw Sweet Stout in the mix but there are a host of beers that range from almost sickly-sweet up to the versions of "mild" that are almost as bitter as "bitter". ;)

I wish I was English like my hero Tj.
You just haven't had 'good' beer. :)

Personally I like a little bit of 'bite', but it can be really over done. Right now IPAs and whatnot are in vogue, at least in the States. To me that's just way too bitter. However, a good stout is just phenomenal. Slight caramel malt or such... Those are great.

NO BEER. You're supposed to be losing weight, remember?

You can smash them in like a matelot when you hit target weight. ;)
