Newcomer / Intro Are asteroid fields good for anything?

Yo folks - Like anyone here, I have flown into some asteroid fields, but even with mining gear didn't find anything useful.
Other than being interesting, and rather fun to fly through, do Asteroid fields provide any actual benefit? It would be WONDERFULLY cool if they could provide mineable resources NOT available from rocky/metallic Rings; possibly the chance of finding unique, interesting things. DO they?
None of the asteroid fields I've ever visited (perhaps 3 or 4) provide anything but rocks to fly around.
Is there anything in asteroids (NOT RINGS!!!) that provide any kind of benefit?
Cheers!

I think the theoretical "usefullness" is that they are predictable. Small enough that if you find something juicey, you can come back a week later and get the same thing from the same rock.
Also, for small ships they are probably big enough as you will be out of limpets before you are done while not requiring a big SC trip from the entry point.

That said, have not been to one in several years.

Try a prospector limpet to see what's in them. I don't know if anything is in there cause I never been to one in my entire game life on ED.

Agreed. They should be "one hit wonders" of sorts. Possibly hard to locate, single big asteroids with high yield of rare ores. That would make them interesting.
As it is, they are just an unnecessary clutter on your FSS screen. :D
Exactly - say ONE rock in a field with a huge yield, or perhaps rare mats or even a derelict (guardian/Thargoid) hidden within the asteroids. It would be so FUN hunting a field wouldn't it? :)

I wish they would make these asteroid clusters larger, with more asteroids. Large enough that they could contain stations, RESs and other interesting stuff.

On a more serious note...

I hopped into my mini-miner (not of the Austin-Morris variety) and shot over to a little local asteroid field because of this thread and curiousity.

Most of it was bog-standard laser mining for pretty cheap materials but one rock did come up with a core of musgravite. Now, I've never core mined a 'roid before so I took the opportunity to try it, just for fun times. And I did it - actually exploded my first ever one. I was pretty pathetic and overcooked the siesmic charge somewhat so yield was rubbish, but...

"It's a start, and I believe in starts" as Joey "The Lips" an would have said. EDIT here: "an" = I was try to type the name "Fa gan" but the forum-swear-o-bot refuses it.

So, yeah. asteroids are good for something! Thank you, NorthernDevo!

Asteroid fields. They bring back fond memories of when I was a fledgling psychopath. What a great place to dump the bodies. Muahahahaaaaaaaaa (cough) 🤪
