Engineers Are barnacles the only way to get meta-alloys?

Visited 2 already. No spikes. It ain't exactly a gameplay peak point to try reaching a specific set of coordinates on a planet's surface, with no technology for pinpointing and/or tracking them. Funny... You'd think such tools would be children's toys in a world where we can travel the galaxy forth and back.

So, I've read at some point in time they could be purchased in Maia, but that was only because the barnacles were bugged. Is there any other way of getting them meta-alloys, besides searching through alien refuse?

Note that unlike other "rare goods" - these don't increase in resale value, in fact they cannot be sold for a profit at all I believe.
