Are CGs just a huge waste of time?

Haven't done any CGs before (well, not signifcantly).

I've spent more than a few hours contributing to 'Development of AX multi-cannon (fixed)' and managed to get in the top 25%.

It looks like my reward will be less credits than I could earn in 30 minutes of mining.
Maybe the advance in tech will help those with Guardian weapons, etc, I'm still grinding for basic engineering.

Think I'll go back to mining, which is also a grind, but a lot more productive.

Am I missing something?

If credits are the only thing you care about, then yes, 90% of CGs are a waste of time.

Some CGs offer global rewards like new starports. Some offer specific modules as rewards if you place high enough. All of them offer an opportunity to participate, however little, in the ongoing narrative, with thousands of other commanders.

Thank you for your response. I tried to do my little bit for the 'community' but it did feel like a fruitless grind.

'Fewer' credits....mind you, you gained more credit for doing it, if you see what I mean. I like the CGs for their sense of community. I feel as though I have helped somehow. Have I?

;-)

We have that, Smirnoff and fevertree...now may I ask a favour? I really dont understand the various forms of ED now. I play on PC and on xbox. What does it all mean? A link to some sort of convoluted explaination would be tickety boo! I probably wont understand it though.
I sign up to most CGs as it makes me feel I am part of something bigger. If the game is somehow splintered, well its obviously depleting its appeal, is'nt it?

6 million on AX missiles at top 10 percent.but yeah they are low paided jobs.i managed to minge with a bit of mixed trading so much for the cg and normal trading,But you going to have to remember what you getting for the CG.experimentals weapons :)

As I understand it if you're on 4.0 you can play with other PC players on 4.0 (Horizons Live, Horrizons Legacy and Oddysey). If you're on console (3.8) you can play with other players on 3.8 but you won't get any major updates and will not be able to take part in the Thargoid war.
Would someone please correct me if I am wrong?

Maybe they'ye better for the people that have used every (now closed) loophole to progress in the game.
Not really, unless you consider having a decent ship (for whatever the task at hand may be) to be using loopholes. On the contrary, CGs can sometimes be the loophole that turns the credits tap on; I bought most of my carrier on my alt account with the proceeds from one CG a few months ago. Just keep an eye on the CGs each week and decide whether to dip in or not based on what you see.

I would correct you if you were wrong, but since you're not, I won't.

Kind of.
You got to keep all the money you made selling the required goods, then there is the reward on top of that. But you are right these CGs are not ways to get rich quickly.
The purpose of this one was the AX multicannon you mentioned which is a better anti Thargoid weapon that those of us without Guardian technology had before.

How useful to us as individual players varies depending on the type of CG, it’s goals, it’s rewards (sometimes there are decals) and how FDev set the prices. My problem with CGs is I can get ‘addicted‘ to them to the detriment of my progress. They can be easier if you have all the gear but you can get all the gear without using loopholes.

Some are not well paying, like these, but they are enabling and releasing new Enhanced AX weapons in the war, which if you want to RP it, you are sort of delivering the required raw mats for the engineers and scientists to develop new techs just like IRL would happen (and is happening).

Other CG's made people billions - the Tritium CG made me 1.8B in casual play, some earnt 4-5B or more.

You can look out for them (I'm sure we will get at least 1 decent paying CG over the coming few weeks) or just go and play out in the black and stop moaning 🍿🍿

It all depends on the CG. Please let me illustrate with a graph. I don't remember exactly what that CG consisted of, but it was Christmas, for all those cmdr who participated. My advice; keep an eye on them, you never know. But GC isn't just about the credits. Also the rewards, as special modules. It is also the best way to do PVP with meaning. For me it is the part, that gives life to the game, when the community does not create its own content (Like the BGS wars). Some CGs have also had surprise rewards.
