Are CGs just a huge waste of time?

Haven't done any CGs before (well, not signifcantly).

Am I missing something?

Yes, you have missed a ton of unique modules (like weapons and FSDs with double engineering, impossible to achieve otherwise). Some of them have been opened up for unlock for a (large) number of rare mats, others are unobtainable.

You've also missed some big money-making CGs (also at a level not possible otherwise, not even with diamond mining or the like).

When you see a build featuring AX MC (fixed) you can say to yourself:
"I made that possible"
And feel a warm glow inside.
That's worth more than credits.
Fixed AX MCs were the first AX weapon to appear. They and AX missile racks were the only thing we had when Thargs first appeared.

Unless you mean an "[efficient] build" featuring fixed Enhanced AX MCs, which will probably not be the case either. If you can hit hearts with fixed weapons, you're better off using anything else other than the MCs as they seem to be by far the weakest AX weapon, Enhanced or not. Turrets are fine vs. scouts, and gimballed may be decent enough for Cyclops (we'll see), but fixed EAX MCs are dead on arrival, I think.

I've spent more than a few hours contributing to 'Development of AX multi-cannon (fixed)' and managed to get in the top 25%.

It looks like my reward will be less credits than I could earn in 30 minutes of mining.
Maybe the advance in tech will help those with Guardian weapons, etc, I'm still grinding for basic engineering.

Think I'll go back to mining, which is also a grind, but a lot more productive.

CGs? Computer games are a huge waste of time! Play them for enjoyment and interest if you like. Apply the same reasoning to CGs; no other justification is possible.

I like Community Goals per Open mode to play with other CMDRs, check out their ship builds, look at the paintjobs and converse on System Chat (works in any mode to all other modes). Oh yes there is also a Community Goal I get to be a pert of.

You have my gratitude, I can't support the current CGs, and only have time for some quick Scout combat, but wanted the new Gimballed AX MC.

Also,I remember a CG for filling some megaship named Alexandria with guardian items, I use a SRV and reached Top 10 or 10%. Most veteran players know the end of the ship. I was so angry that didn't take part in the similar CG but for "Salvation" megaship. Also discovered latter that you can collect from space using limpets. Didn't take part in this CG, they didn't send me for future salvation messages (but joined because players post this in reddit). I joined Wych Hunt 1 year later.

At the end, you have your "Personal narrative", you support was a new weapon, maybe useful, maybe useless. Maybe great if they improve Xenoscanner to work at long range. Be proud of the extra thargoid defense you gift us with this new weapon.

If you need credits, there is a Credits Per Activity table in r/EliteDangerous , and I post lot of guides here. I already have 30B i ncredits and assest (half from Golconda CG, 410K/ton tritium) and money is useless.

Better question: Are computer games a huge waste of time?

Generally yes. However, after hundreds of hours in ETS2 i feel qualified to drive a big rig, which is nice.

Back in the day years ago CGs were good fun. Seeing many cmdrs and queues at stations wad fun while people attempted to generate some cash.

Since money has become very easy to earn, the CG has become less of a thing.

They are good to unlock something but once other have done it, with introduction of tech brokers you can buy things from there, again reducing CGs need.

Yes apart from the occasional CGs that generate silly money or special modules or decals they are not for personal gain anymore they are for the stated goal.

Does that make them less fun, not really, unless of course your fun was from your gains. You still get to do the same sort of activities as back in the golden age* you can still see people, get caught in a queue or get ganked, though the numbers are lower.

*When people used to complain that CGs weren’t what they used to be.

The problem is not "are CGs a waste of time", it's "the CR economy has become a joke". Back in the 1.x days CGs were a good earner. That was before you could make billions in a day.
It.
They buffed nearly everything, without giving us creditsinks (no, even carriers aren't it, if you can milk hundreds millions in 1 casual evening), so now "old" things, like CGs, rares, or even smuggling and piracy looks extremally bad. But it happened for material gathering too (hzn surface facilities, or installations hacking, anyone?)
Sure, they could boost literally ALL activities to current, broken level, but why? Even now you can earn billions even without thinking about money, so instead wanting even more buffs...just do what we want.

I just do what I want as I don't need any more credits. I did participate in all the AX weapon CGs to the upper 10-25%. I didn't do it for the credits, but rather to make sure that the AX weapons became widely available as quickly as possible. Though I have to admit that the low payout was somewhat demotivating. :)

IMO, they could have given us some decals or something for the effort.

Community Goals are probably the last basion of play where everyone can play in Open mode without worring about greifers. Especially if the goal is pre-engineered weapons which the griefers also want! Still they might show up but then me in a Cutter with prismatic shields, a long range wake scanner, an engineered FSD Intedictor, a fighter pilot and weapons to inflict harm will be happy to take on any greifer who shows up. The point is come to Open mode in a CG and make friends. If someone messess with you then I and many others will give them something else to deal with. Then maybe we will make their day enjoying the combat. I understand.
