And switching should require entering space dock, otherwise once again the danger is that you could end up with some Swiss Army Knife of a ship that can fulfil all roles again, limited only by the size of your hold.

in FE2 you already couldnt do it with every ship, the panther for instance couldnt be equiped with a fuel scoop, that's why i used the puma instead for trying to go as far as i could in one direction.

That's right, at least I think so. But then I did end up messing around with Frontier a lot. Including one mod/hack that allowed me to mess around with the strength of the ships thrusters. I have my Panther Clipper the thrust of a Naval Missile. 65G's of acceleration on a ship that big was insane but great fun! :D
