Are Frontier taking ship design suggestions still?

Just wondering if the devs are looking for suggestions in ship design? iv read that they wanted a big variety for ship looks and sizes. So are they willing to take in some ideas from the fans?

I don't remember FD ever asking for backer ideas/designs for ships - from the little I know of model design for 3d games, the specifications are normally too extacting and there can be major issues with intelectual property rights down the line.

That said, I can't see why you couldn't start your own thread on the subject and explore concepts with other forum members. There is bound to be at least one of the FD team who can't resist checking the thread for imaginative concepts.

There was something along these lines once, I posted a couple of basic ideas and deck layouts for ships but not sure if anyone took much interest in them :S

Frontier seems to have quite strong idea of what they want to achieve. And they know that fans will eventually want to see more of the classic ships make a return in post-launch updates, so converting them may be a priority (unless they want to expand the selection of some new type of ship that did not exist before - such as the passenger liners).

I've seen community ship ideas before for another game in development - it was interesting but a nightmare for the devs to manage. Very time consuming, contributors tended to get offended when their hard work was criticised and there issues with copyright at the end.

If they got offended by criticism then perhaps being an artist is not for them as it's all subjective. Be happy that someone took the time to critique your work, that's what I say. It would be far worse for them to ignore you entirely.

I'm not too happy with the Imperial Ship design. Well I believe it's Imperial.

The long ship that gets shot up in the latest video.

The one with spinning wheel in it's rear.

It just doesn't seem right to me.

Frontier never consulted about ship design. and looking at some of the designs we've seen so far I've no complaints.

And yes its its a imperial designed ship.

I liked it. Gave me very Firefly-like vibes and made me fantasise about captaining a crew in it...

The problem is that FD have specific design strategies for their ships. They are based on the old games. New ships will need to conform to a standard that they have in mind. Consistency needs to be protected.

Every faction is recognizable by ship design.

Asp - Not keen.
Cobra MKIII - Okay, but was looking for more... A bit TOO similar to original.
Panther - Ditto.
Viper - A work of stunning beauty - love it.
Imperial Eagle - Ditto.
Imperial Cruiser - Like it... strange looking, aquatic almost, but good.
Imperial fighter - "Meh".
Fed Cruiser - Sort of okay, I guess. Not very inspiring really.
Fed Fighter - I like this one actually. Especially the recent re-designs.
Sidewinder - Hate it. Flying wedge of wood, like an interstellar doorstop.
Anaconda - Okay(ish) - could do with (quite a lot) more work.

I hated the Eagle (it a nice ship - but it's shape is nothing like that of the classic original), and so far I've seen no signs they've listened to such criticism :-(

I think what this thread proves is everyone has different tastes. You will never design a ship that everyone likes, just ain't gonna happen. But that's fine because out of the 25 playable ships surely everyone will find something they like. So far my favourite has to be the Viper. Sleek and mean looking exactly as it should be.

Actually - I think everyone can agree that the Viper is a real catwalk supermodel of a ship... Absolutely stunning.

The others suffer a bit in comparison.
