I don't think so but thought I should ask. I did perform the FSD increased range grade 1 on one of my ship and that unlocked grade 2. Now, if I show up with a different ship, should I be able to apply the grade 2 upgrade to that ship or does it have to be the original ship?
Engineers Are higher level upgrades to be applied to same module?

You can apply the upgrade to any module (previously upgraded or not). For the higher levels (3, 4 and 5) it is strongly recommended to do on 'new' modules, instead of upgrade a level 4 to level 5, as drawbacks could be worse than the benefit.
If you have several ships, I'd suggest to increase what you need, but if you go the grinding way, than I'd suggest to increase those you don't really need, so they get you rep to unlock the levels you need for the modules you want.
