Are Limpets something recent?

Out in a very pretty Ice belt in my new T6 mining away - actually I was supposed to be in a Pristine Metallic elsewhere but that's another story.

Anyway my limpets are out picking up my minerals and I came here to ask:

Somebody mentioned once that in the "old days" of ED there were no limpets? And you had to cargo scoop each chunk? Yikes!
I think I would head to Sag A in a Sidewinder first!

Limpets are not that recent.

Limpets DO need an AI buff, just like the NPCs got.....but that's another story for another day.

They have been around a while, I'm not too sure which patch introduced them. Mining was an activity for the persistent player before they were there!

Hey, you picked up the T-6! Alright man! Hope you're enjoying it :)

Boy I bet!
Since I am here in the Ice field if someone could assist: In the metallics you have the 3 P's for desired chunks.
Besides LT Diamonds what should I be looking for in the ice belt?

Eh... not much else, and LTDs are few and far between. The best way to profit from ice mining is to combine it with the mission board. Find a faction that's looking for ice-ring commodities, and stack their mining missions. As you rep up with them, the missions will yield more and more profit. The LTDs that you pick up along the way are just icing on the cake.

Yeah, like Yaffle said (ninja'd :) )

"Limpet" is actually a typo. They were supposed to be called "Lemmings" due to their propensity to chain-suicide into everything.

I do swear a lot when I see them dutifully suiciding one after the other for no good reason. Or when you get one fragment that clips inside the asteroid, and they all follow each other to their doom. And you can't collect anything else, because at some point all the new ones will follow.

The best profit for ice mining is getting missions for the ore beforehand. The code seems to actively select mining missions from what you don't have in your hold, rather than be totally random.
As well as having mostly low profit ores, ice roids have much lower yields than the other ring types. Ice diamonds pay well, but are extremely rare. There isn't much in the way of material yeild in ice rings either. Add to that the fact that ice roids are mostly wild tumbling limpet munchers.

In all, it appears that FD don't really want us to be doing much in the way of ice mining.

Recent is subjective, but 1.0 didnt have limpets of any kind. Explorers didnt have AFMUs either, and didnt get their name on first discoveries. The AI was horrible, most ships didnt exist yet, missions served no purpose, the BGS was fairly broken, you couldn't wing up with friends, you could easily grief people in stations without anything happening, there were no planets you can land or drive on, there was no customization of your modules ala engineers. It got 80/100 on metacritic based on 54 reviews regardless, and its been improved a fair bit in the last 18 months or so. IMHO.

The only thing that didnt change is the amount of complaining FD does too little too slow. :)

I had thought it was just me that happened to. Seems not.

Hmmm...too bad.
My plan was to load up on assorted stuff then go see what missions wanted them. Never has worked well in past careers and I, perhaps, can see why. Kind of gamey if I may say.

The problem is it seems to work in reverse also. I accept a mission to get something and all of a sudden it's scarce and I have scramble. Stop doing fetch missions for that reason. Course to play Devils Advocate if it was easy to get there may not be a mission to get it in the first place.

Huh. I have never had a problem with them...while mining anyway.
Happens to me all the time, mainly if you are mining a good asteroid that is turning a lot, you have to time when you take chunks out other wise the asteroid will crush all your limpets when they go for that one piece that is really close to it.

Most of the time, it's because a roid has rotated over top of a fragment. When the limpets try to collect one of these fragments it suicides into the side of the roid. it is possible to avoid this happening by being careful where you drill. Near the axis or rotation (if there is one) is usually OK, also drilling just the tips of the peaks as they swing past usually works. But if all your limpets die on one fragment, you can wait for the roid to swing past before releasing more.
The worst fragments are the ones that somehow end up well inside the roid. When this happens, you are best just abandoning the roid.
