Are limpets terrible?

I've recently given pirating a try again, and between taking his and breaking hatches I didn't do bad.

But then I deployed the collector limpets.

They seem horrendously useless. The range is generally horrible, and if you're moving even a little bit they'll fail to drop it into your cargo scoop. Am I doing something wrong?

Collectors are generally bad to be used combined with hatch breakers because the cargo gets so spread out and the collection range is so short. You may as well just scoop. Yes moving will destroy cargo trying to be placed in your hull generally.

Collectors can be useful if you pirate players and talk them into dropping large amounts of cargo in one spot, but hatch breaking cargo makes them a bit worthless, more of a pain that just manually scooping imo.

I dunno i kind of like them, what i do is deploy one then generally follow it about, but slow to a stop when they come back.

I like the collectors a lot,
position your bottomside over the cargo cloud,
release the cargo-kitty and relax.

Just make sure not to target a specific container, or else
the limpet is used up, after the transport.

I did attempt to null the ship's movement by shooting out the drives but it didn't seem to do anything besides make the ship spiral.

Does it seem game breaking to have limpets generally have range equal to your scanners?

Does it seem game breaking to be able to use limpets while moving?

I'm inclined to think changing either of those things will make pve piracy more doable. Right now it just doesn't seem it.

Have to disagree here, there are ways to use them quite effectively together. Hatch breakers and collectors that is. I just love them collectors so much I don't consider manual scooping any more, but that's just me.

So.

Never shoot out the drives.

Enemy shouldn't have point defence. You can make this happen.

You should be able to tank their damage for loooong time (20 cargo limit as of now)

Having beam turret(s) doesn't hurt at all.

Have as many collectors in space as you can at a time. Try with 3 and up, that's where it starts being awesome. Look at the B module too - it has more collectors for less range.

No more clues.

I guess I don't normally get clouds, I get streams or messes. Too far apart.

How do you make them stop then? Your post wasn't very clear on how it actually works.

Ah, also you can just edge towards the next set of canisters with your directional thrusters when the drones are heading out / start to head back in, and come to a stop when they starting to get near you with the loot, so you get less "no valid collection targets" messages.

Well, I didn't want to be clear to leave some space for you to enjoy figuring it out for yourself. :D And to answer, you don't. ;)

That does make sense...I feel like that gets difficult as you stop to get the cargo and your prey runs away though. That hasn't been an issue for you?

That's the thing, they keep attacking you if you don't damage their hull too much - NPCs that is. Ofc commanders run, but that's a different matter altogether - you can ask them to release some cargo by abandoning, so it doesn't get marked as stolen. That's also when you get the "cloud" effect as they release a whole bunch at once, not like with limpets, one at a time.
