Are Mac's at a disadvantage?

Hi Everyone. Apologies if I'm covering old ground, I've just registered today and although I've had a quick look at PVE vs PVP topics I just wanted to ask about Mac users in particular. The game is being released on Mac three months after the Windows release and on top of that Mac users can't download the Beta it seems. Does this mean that Mac users are going to be at a major disadvantage? The way I see it Windows users will have had the opportunity to have gained practice on the Beta and then 3 months to improve cash/ship/relations etc. before the Mac players join in. Is this right?

In a way I'm totally ok with this (apart from being massively excited and desperate to get involved). I think my biggest concern was if it became a massively dense PKing free for all, I'd never get off the ground. Having just read around a few more threads I'm pleased to see that the design should be able to cushion this.

Emulator is something I'd not thought of, anyone know of a good one? Will the Beta struggle on something like this?

It's not a race or a Competitive Esport.

No that's right. I should point out it doesn't really bother me (Other than being really excited about the game and wanting to get going as soon as possible). The reason I asked initially was due to the PVP elements, imagining not even being able to get started due to getting shot out of the sky the second I entered. However I've read a few more threads now and see that the general assumption is that there is a lot in place to cushion this kind of thing.

Always.

Or, do you mean the game. :D

On a more serious note, I advice everyone to buy a Mac these days, they way, when it goes wrong I can't help them. I'm a PC guy, so I don't have a clue how to fix Macs. Sorry, that wasn't serious either (though accurate)

Yes, PC users will be ahead by three months - assuming they can port it in 3 months - not sure how much of the Cobra engine is DX vs. what Mac uses.

I thought I had read some folks using the windows VM? That might be a different game??

My guess is you will need to stick to the saver areas in the game, also, due to the vastness you will not meet too many actual people!

You might read posts about 400B stars, don't be fooled, us players will most likely hang around within a 10,000 star area, but, that is still thinly spread. Just nit as thin as some post might lead you to believe.

Welcome aboard commander, you will have fun, I sure am in Beta! :D

You were at a disadvantage from the second you bought one. :D

J/K. To each his own and so on.
You will be at a disadvantage at first, but it will level out in the long run.
The biggest hurdle will be getting used to the flightmodel used. After that there's a whole galaxy waiting for you.
I doubt the PC gamers will complete it in a few months. Or lifetimes.;)

Are the Mac versions of CH Products peripherals any different from PC versions, as when I was looking they were quite a bit cheaper; so there is potentially an advantage!

Although I'll need a copy of Windows too right?

You need Windows but you can get 90 day trial versions of Windows. If all you are doing is using it for Elite then once the 90 days is over you wipe the container and do it again. A bit of work every 3 months isn't that big a deal. Or just do buy it, it isn't as expensive as it used to be.

The big advantage of getting involved early is that you probably make all the easy mistakes while still in Beta. So not leaving any insurance money or putting all your cash into a hold full of cargo.

Yes you will - I'm using 8.1 & Bootcamp on a 5 year old Mac Pro. Apart from having to upgrade the graphics card, ED works just fine.

If you have ever bought a retail copy of Windows 7 or later, and are no longer using that license anywhere else, you can Bootcamp it and have Microsoft permanently activate it.

You can't do that with an OEM license however.

The question is are you buying access to the game or a specific version?
IE if you buy the beta for windows will you then be able to download the Mac installer or will you have to buy it as well?
I would expect that it is the former, in which case no problem, but might be worth checking before you buy.
