Are Mac's at a disadvantage?

Delayed releases for other operating systems

Don't forget, there's a pseudo-offline mode. A lot of folks use that to safely build up a ship to combat strength, and only then go online. I'd recommend that approach to any late adopters, specifically to mitigate the problem the OP raised.

Not every beta backers is playing every available moment. Some are only dipping in occasionally after each update, play a few hours, raise a few tickets and then dip out, not wanting to risk tiring of it before release.

Even after release, some people will play every night, others perhaps only a few hours every now and again. I don't think the OP will really have to worry about a universe full of elite players on day 1, or even day 365.

I've been playing since PB1 and I only play a few hours every now and again. I don't feel overwhelmed against all the alpha pros that live in the game. But I did learn quickly how to stay safe, pick my fights carefully and build my wealth steadily. Those rules will still apply long after release day.

ED won't work in VMware / Parallels

Hi Guys,

For the benefit of anyone like me that had hoped to run ED in a VM until the native OS X release comes out, neither VMware or Parallels support the necessary version of Direct X - so it's Bootcamp or nothing on the Mac right now :( (The launcher will install, but the game itself will bomb out at start up.)

So after many, many weeks of delay and tormenting myself with videos of what could be, today I'm finally about to sully my Mac and install Bootcamp!

I wonder if my 30 year old Cobra piloting skills will have survived the ravages of time..? I look forward to finally seeing you all out on the frontier!

Cheers,

Interesting you should say that, as I've somehow managed to get Beta 3.05 to sort-of work in a Windows 7 x64 Parallels VM. Admittedly I can only navigate the menus and play the two basic combat tutorials. It's a bit slow, but just about playable. It allowed me to tweak my X52 Pro settings if nothing else.

I only gave it a go as the combination of my 2008 MacPro, Mavericks and Bootcamp doesn't work (new software, old hardware). So I aim to get a new iMac in a few weeks. That should Bootcamp Win 7 without any problems, then I just have to figure out how to get the X52 Pro not to freak out about USB 3.

I'm looking forward to the native Mac beta, though a potential thorn may be not being able to map all the X52 Pro keys.

Of course Mac users are at a disadvantage. The companies whole strategy evolves around overcharging users incapable of using a proper computer.

Disclaimer: I know a couple of competent Unix users who are really proficient with OS X. They build their 'Macs' using PC components and avoid buying from Apple.

Being a Mac user, I'm always jealous of my few friends that get to use proper computers. All I ever get to do is boring stuff like download application, use application.
