Are mining hotspots broken in Odyssey?

Hey all,

I'm a very experienced laser miner in Horizons and fancied doing some again, the first time in ages. However, something isn't right...

I've been to numerous "Hot Spots" for a given resource and, after firing off hundreds of Prospector Limpets I've not found even one asteroid that contains the advertised material. I've got some other stuff off my list of allowed (aka, fetch a decent price) resources but not once have I found any of the Hot Spot advertised material.

I know in the past the game could bug out the instance so you'd enter say a Painite Hot Spot but the game would instance you somewhere entirely different in the ring. Rare, but happened to me a number of times. However, I've never found NONE of the advertised resource so consistently over several hours of play with hundreds of Prospector consumed.

The only Hot Spot I had moderate success with last night was Painite. Entering other Hot Spots (e.g. Bertrandite, Monazite) yielded zero asteroids.

Anyone else seeing this? I just fancied a little mining this eve, which I did, and I've gotten decent amounts of Platnum along with some Painite and Osmium, but no Bertrandite and Monazite at all.

I have been mining Painite today at a hot spot as well, no problems. Last time I went looking for something else (LTDs?) I found lots of other stuff, particularly tritium. But, my memory is hazy about that. Have you tried just dropping into the ring rather than the hotspot and mining? I do that often if no hotspot is conveniently available. Less productive, but less stressful I find.

Steve 07.

Yeah, Painite was fine yesterday and I'm trying it again quickly before I log off and it's ok. Other stuff though isn't working.

I usually just drop into the ring near a hot spot, ideally an overlapping one, but had been going directly to the host spot this time. This technique works for Painite, not for the other stuff though. I'll try some more techniques when I next get the chance. It's just odd to find nothing for a given hot spot resource though. Low amounts, sure, it happens, but never nothing.

Bertrandite and monazite are core deposits only, so laser mining for them isn't going to get you anything.

Lol, ooops! Well, that was really silly of me. I just saw hot spots with those two, checked the prices and went in to look around. Didn't occur to me they were Core only. I know some are of course, just didn't think those two were for some reason. Cheers for clearing that up.

Late night mining evidently isn't a good idea! lol.

how does one make money mining nowadays? I mean 8 million payouts (yes, its jsut an asp explorer as I started a new save) for a full load of 30 tons of painite is not worth my time and that is the best ive been able to get while mining so far.

I do use inara and the miners tool however Im just not making any real money.

So far it appears that the best money in the game right now for a newbie like me is the road 2 riches. Mining appears to be completely unprofitable and I haven't done any combat yet.

Nope, hotspots do work well in Odyssey, but you need to be careful what hotspot you get in. Some hotspots materials are available only in Cores so if you go prospecting for laser mining you will never find any

Also Painite is tricky too - it can be laser mined only in Metallic rings.
But it's entirely possible to find Painite hotspots in Metal Rich rings, where Painite can be found only in Cores

how does one make money mining nowadays?

Mining Platinum in a Haz Res or a High Res in a Hotspot.
Anything else is rather crappy and not worth mining.

(Cores are worthy only at more than 1.3 millions per ton and nothing sells like that today, Painite has been nerfed, LTD too)

It's definitely not like it was but I really never thought mining should be a road to anything but a fairly predictable and steady income. However with a carrier I can make about 1/2 to 3/4 billion fairly easy. In that case I mine just about everything there is to mine. Transfer the metals to the carrier and go on with my exploration trip. When I come back with about 5000T of metals I sell the Platinum and Painite and hunt missions for the Osmium, Samarium, and Praismodium which are usually easy to find. Gold and Silver missions are more rare but also turn up. Once those can't be filled just sell off the rest or leave it for the next trip.

Mining some Tritium also becomes important here because trying to just purchase all the fuel used can really get unpleasant outside the bubble.

Its key to remember that Elite isnt about the money. Sure we want the fancier ships but its better to start grinding for engineer mats and unlocks more so than trying to get the bigger, fancier ships.

Now, to remember that the next time i log in to Elite . . .

While prices are no where near what they were for Painite - which was likely the staple for many - they're still pretty decent. I can reliably make more casual mining vs. any other activity - excluding some of the Wing stuff where payouts can be quadrupled for a given goal, which is just bloody stupid.

The thing is, now, I'll do a bit of mining if I fancy doing a bit of mining and that's it. I fancied a bit of mining, so a mining I shall go. When it comes to selling, aka realising the profit, well, that will be something for another day. I recently sold a bunch of Painite mined likely a good year or so ago. Made about 400 million or so. I'll likely hoard the next lot of mined stuff for a while too, if I see some good offers, then I'll sell.

For me, this has been more about the activity than the profit, though decent profits will come...eventually. I was just trying different materials to mine over the last couple of nights, in additional to the Painite, Platinum and Osmium I was gathering previously.

Shudda likely mined for the CG if I really wanted profits - I assume the CG was paying high-prices for easy to obtain stuff that is usually pretty cheap. Didn't actually check it.

Nah.
CG pays twice the galactic average. Which is really crap (for mining minerals mostly)

For example, CG payed bromellite with 60k per ton.
Some stations, having the correct combination of BGS effects, were offering 116k per ton. 😒

Oh, I assumed a Mining CG would pay top prices, just like a regular trade CG...good to know I didn't miss out!
