Are NPC griefers (or whatever trhe term is) a thing or I hit a bug

Minding my own business in a Sidey I just swapped into at Deciat - on way to engineer the FSD. Got distracted with something on my phone so throttled back.
After a while I got interdicted....no message first. No worries, I have no cargo rack so....wait for scan and they'll be on their way.

except...nope. I'm motionless and waiting and all of a sudden they open fire! Boost boost jump and I get out with 45% hull (shieldess after all).

so is this a 'thing' to make the galaxy more 'realistic' or is there something else? I would have expected a scan at least.

Oh.......come on, NPC's cannot be griefers, NPC's are based on the game, their motives are within the game, as for NPC's randomly shooting it 'can' be a bounty hunter, but yes, there are npc's that will fire regardless of bounty in another system or not.
And lets face it, there needs to be some of that, ruthless criminals, but even that doesn't make them griefers, they scale to you, so you always have a chance, it is a challenge by the game to you, the game is not meant to be entirely safe. And entirely depends on where you are, and again, this is based on the game, the game is made to be a certain way.

Griefers on the other hand, do not seek a challenge, do not seek anything in game, they simply want to disrupt others game play.

There are supposed to be 'dangers' in space, and no, these dangers or the 'dangerous' in Elite does not stand for players, but npc's Elite is not a pvp focused game, technically npc's have a 'reason' and valid background to do so, where griefers do not have anything as such, since their reason for doing so does not involve the game itself.

So yeah.

I'm not sure if you think I was having a whine or just that I used the wrong word. all I was after is whether this is known thing or not. to the best of my knowledge I'm not wanted anywhere, I've never powerplayed, and I had no cargo. In the passed there's always been a reason - cargo, or I'm trying to run away before a scan.

Looking back at EDD;

It would actually be pretty cool if that was the pilot from the T9 I attacked the other day (unsuccessfully) to try and get chemical manipulators [anarchy system], but I don't think that's the case

Yeah, I'll call NPCs griefers (the devs - they programmed them).

I'm in my starter Sidey, mostly harmless, no cargo, and I drop into a threat 0 uss and get jumped by 3 Vipers. That doesn't sound very scaled to me. If I had chaff instead of shield boosters, and tried high waking out, or even fighting back, I may have survived. But it was 12 seconds from first shot to rebuy screen. I don't find that very realistic. That, or getting interdicted with no cargo and getting shot at as well - at least that was just a single and I got away.

I'll admit I'm pretty rusty as I've barely played in many months before recently clearing my save, and I've mostly been exploring since. Meh, it's part of the game and I'm not going to fret about it, but I wish there were fewer psychos out in the black - NPC or otherwise.

Yeah, NPCs will attack you whether you have cargo or not. It used to be the occasional psycho that actually said "Scanners are for the weak!" and attacked you anyway, but it looks like they're all psycho now. I'm really hoping that FD are waiting for X.Y "The NPCs" to actually put some effort into NPCs.

Random NPCs are more likely to attack if you're carrying cargo, but still can if you're not. I wouldn't know for sure since the latest patch though, since I haven't had any NPC interdiction attempts, but I'm assuming it still works this way.

To be fair though, I don't bother with passively letting them scan me either way. I either engage them or leave.

And yeah, I wouldn't call them griefers either... :p ;)
