Are NPC pilots that bad??

I played in Solo for a while today and last night and every time I came to a station, those NPCs were flying like they had their eyes closed or were stopping from hitting an animal crossing in front of them! Multiple times I had to dodge around them going both into and out of the slot. They would randomly stop in flight around the stations and change directions too.

It made for some weird viewing!

They also don't seem to have figured out how to manage their super cruise speed near stations. They over shoot and go in circles all the time.

NPC's are like over exuberant puppies. Every now and again you have to hit them on the nose with a rolled up newspaper.

I think they should be more cautious over all with their flying. Twice I've been "Wanted for Murder" after colliding with small ships that have crossed path with me when flying the Fer-de-lance. At stations I almost always use a docking computer for landing and have been lucky on takeoff and not collided with them.

Pips to shields, speed to 99 and in I go. I stopped stopping for anything or anyone a loooong time ago. If I am bigger than you (and 99.9% of the time I am) then you'd better get out of the way.

That said, I have never had to shout at NPC's lately. Human CMDR's, well now, that's different. I have various shades of paint and quite a few spare parts stuck to the hull of my Battle-Conda, what with these hot-rods blatting themselves on my hull like bugs on a windscreen when they attempt to scream in/out the letterbox.....I swear it looks like something out of a Mad-Max movie!

Nah, they aren't bad, in fact the AI has just become too realistic. I've seen way way way too many people worry about docking but have little to no problem with combat, yet the sight of the docking slot fills them with dred and they end up messing up badly.

This, hee-hee :).

Actually, I see that as a sure sign of improvement in AI. When everyone agrees that the AI is terrible, then it's clearly not up to par. But when some are complaining that it's too easy and some that it's too hard, it means that the AI pilots are smarter than some players but not all. That's a good thing.

I had to chuckle... This thread and the 'AI is Too Good' threads on the same page. ;)

I am not sure which topic to post this in, as good and bad.

On my way to an outpost for a mission and local police start shooting, no scans or warnings. I have a python so local police not even making a impact on shields, but NPC continued to fire inside no-fire zone (Yes I understand police can). Then continued to be under fire while I docked and while on pad, so put ship inside outpost before completing missions. Then undocked to find same police still shooting at me.

10/10 persistent, but 1/10 for NPC IQ firing on ship while docking/docked. Specially given I have no bounty and no scan to detect what I was carrying.

So was local police tipped off or NPC AI need some looking into?

ELITE NPC's are too easy - Make them tougher!

So you cruise along and an NPC interdicts you.

You target him and discover that his combat rating is ELITE.

Are you worried?
Are you afraid?
Does panic hit you as you try to figure out how to escape?

No.

Because Elite ranked NPC's are flying bullseyes like every other NPC out there. The only reason SOME of the Elite ranked NPC's seem like they are "good" pilots is simply because they are stuffed into Anaconda's and Pythons with a rack of turrets that wreck your ship from every angle.

Truth is, Elite ranked NPC's are worse pilots than an average 3-day old player rookie in the game.

My firm statement is that this needs to change since the game is far from feeling dangerous. I should be afraid of Elite ranked anything, whether it's player or NPC.

"But oh the danger part should come from the PvP and other players attacking you!"

Rubbish.

An Elite ranked NPC should be so good, and lethal, that he will (provided he's in a similar or better ship) completely destroy a player 9 out of 10 times. You should be WORRIED or even AFRAID to lose your ship if you get jumped by Elite ranked NPC's (and players). It should be no walk in the park or "that NPC was so tough I had to do two extra maneuvers and shoot my lazers three times extra to kill it".

It should take hours, days, weeks even with hard practice to get good enough at dogfighting to take on Elite ranked NPC's.

So sick and tired of this instant-gratification, hand-me-stuff-for-zero-effort gamer generation we have lately that QQ about anything that requires actually getting good before you can kill it. I miss the damn games where sometimes you, as a person, were simply not good enough to overcome certain stages of a game, or defeat a boss... not unless you worked hard, for hours.

Boost the NPC's. And not even by a little. Boost the Elite ones to the point that only the most devoted and skilled combat pilots have even a shred of hope to defeat them. And even then they should be limping and bleeding after the fight.

When I get pulled over by an ELITE NPC my thought should not be centered around targetting him and targetting his subsystem. My thoughts should be centered around "How the hell am I going to get out of this one alive???".

Feel free to flame me... but I am BORED with the routine dogfight vs NPC's in the game as they provide ZERO challenge.

I actually fell asleep in my chair DURING a dogfight against a Deadly rated Anaconda... that's how routine and boring the ---Target power plant and do loops while holding down fire button for X seconds --- type of "dogfighting" has become in the game.

Please boost the NPCs so they are more than just ship-shaped bullseyes.

Maybe they are really good, but you're just better? I know lots of people say they are good, so clearly there's an overlap of abilities. I do think though that a handful of Elite pilots should be all but impossible to beat, at least on a 1v1 or 2v1 situation. The game would benefit from having some of these floating around in various systems and should be genuine 'brown trouser time' when you encounter them....It needs some Red Baron like pilots. fwiw

What are you flying OP? If you're flying a small ship, then an Elite ranked equivalent ship can definitely be a challenge, though I agree difficulty could and should be ramped a bit. If you're flying a big ship stuffed with boosters and SCBs, then downgrade for more challenge and fun. In fact, if you REALLY want challenge, fly a Sidewinder into a high intensity CZ. Go on - do it!
