Are planet surfaces supposed to look like this?

So, couple things...

I recently started planetary landing after a long time not bothering as the initial gameplay really put me off. Much seems to have been done with this, and salvage missions for one seem much cooler with the whole designated location and scanning for precise location, vs random poi investigation that it used to be. But doing so, I noticed some weirdness with planet textures that some others probably know more about than me..

Stand out planets
So most planets I landed on looked reasonably detailed on high end graphics settings, but I noticed some really stood out. These stand out planets had features that seemed missing from the others, much higher quality textures and landscapes, mountain ranges and other terrain features that just seemed missing from the other mostly-flat crater-scapes.

Now these planets seem rarer than the others, and seem to be as well as, rather than instead of, the older textures I recognised. Is there a reason this level of detail isn't used on all planets? Is it a gradual rollout? Are these planets only in the bubble or can you find them while exploring? It would be sad if these only existed in the bubble.

Planet texture/mesh issues
EDIT:
ok, so graphics drivers wiped and reinstalled, and it seems no more pointy mountains. Excellent! The varying quality of planets is still a thing though, does anyone know if that is intentional or a slow rollout, or what?
The other issue I noticed when I went mountain climbing in my SRV on one of these more detailed planets (pics below). When I first landed, the detail was spectacular and the SRV contacted the ground pretty accurately. But the higher I climbed, the weirder it got until eventually I was floating in the air (but still on the ground), as well as swimming through the textures themselves!

So you can see in the first image the distant textures are nice and high detailed (even when I got up close), but as I climbed things got blockier and more broken in terms of where the wheels hit. the second picture is my SRV swimming in texture!

So for both issues:
Is this on the Devs fix list? Is it a known problem? Should I raise a bug report? Or will it simply be repeating what others have noticed for much longer?

Check that your GPU drivers are up to date. Most of these issues are GPU driver related.

OP might wanna check those drivers pronto...the gfx on my xbone are just as good as yours and that really shouldnt be so. And I can compare because I run console and pc accounts...what card ye running and what are its latest drivers? That would be my first port of call, then hit forums later ^

Are you running a nvidia card? I had this problem with a new driver, had to go into video setup and make some basic changes before it updated properly.

Try going into elite and changing the graphic settings then putting it back to what they was, this worked for me. Or you could try going into Geforce experience and optimising settings for Elite.

I've seen these pointy low polygon type mountains and hills and thought it was just more "optimization".
.
I'll be really glad if it is just newer graphics drivers required.

I did a clean install of my Nvidia GTX1070 drivers and it hasn't changed what I am seeing (pointy low polygon type mountains).
Maybe I'm being too picky, but I could swear they were better than this in previous times.
Oh well.
