Are ships capable of eight way thrust?

I've been playing for a while now and it just occurred to me that the ships might be capable of eight way thrust. Are they? I've had my vertical and horizontal thrust mapped to a four way hat this whole time, if I were to map it to an eight way hat would that allow me more freedom of movement, for example, would I be able to achieve diagonal thrust?

They are if you map them as axis to an analogue hat.

I imagine an 8 way digital hat would work too. Why don't you try?

Yes, 8-way is the business.

X-52 (and probably X-52 Pro) defaults to 4-way hat on the throttle, which isn't ideal. Reconfiguring it is a good plan!

Yes, though eight way is just firing combinations of lateral and vertical thrusters.

If you have enough axes, you can control all six degrees of freedom directly. :)

8 way thrust!

think about it hotas users especially!

8 way? more like 10 way if you include forward thrust and reverse :)

No. There are only six different directions you can thrust, but your acceleration, which is a sum total of the forces produced by all of your thrusters, can point in any direction.

When you press your controls for 'thrust right' and 'thrust up' simultaneously, you are only thrusting up and right separately (those are the directions your physical thrusters point) but your acceleration vector will point towards up and right in a diagonal angle, as it's the sum of the thrust vectors produced by your bottom and left side thrusters.

There are no limitations to the amount of directions you can accelerate, if you bind all three translational axes to analogue controls.

Even if you had all of them on the keyboard, you could still accelerate in a total of 26 different 'ways' relative to your ship.

I use the 8-way POV HAT on my CH Fighter Stick with amazing results, MUCH better control than the 4-Way HAT I had it assigned to before.

A buddy of mine is using the analogue thumbstick on his Logitech G13 and that feels very natural, and better than a HAT. But not necessary or game-changing imho, just more natural.

I've got horizontal mapped to two buttons and vertical mapped to two, I can boost diagonally by holding boost left and up etc at the same time.

I use an analog stick for up/down and left/right, and combined with forward/backwards thrust I can thrust in any direction - not just eight. Use an analog stick, and get full freedom of movement.
