Are the 5 new ships coming out...

...going to have any combat-specialized ones? Currently the only specialized combat ship under the tens of millions of credits bracket is the Viper, though I vastly prefer the Cobra for more versatility as NPC bounty hunting really doesnt require 100% combat aptitude. However, I have about 6,000,000 credits in assets weighing down my pockets, and I really don't want an ASP (ASP npcs actually seem easier to take out than Cobras or Vipers despite the higher bounties).

I'm not sure if anyone has any idea what the ships are, but hopefully we at least get a combat ship in the ~3-4 million base cost range.

Yep you'd assume there would be a combat ship between the Cobra and Asp...but you have to wonder what kind of monster that's going to be. :p

The thing is that the ASP isn't really a combat ship... For ~15 times the cost you get a whopping two extra small hardpoints. The only thing you're really getting is a better shield and more hull strength, but that's balanced out by the fact that the damn thing is probably one of the easiest ships in the game to hit in a turning battle (since the super-heavies almost always have lots of turrets that make a real turning battle unfeasable)

At this rate I'm going to end up sitting with a Cobra until I save up enough for the Clipper... Ideally I'd like to see something that has little cargo hold or anything, but comes with something like 1x Large Hardpoint 2x Medium or something of the sort, to get some real firepower without being a super-heavy.

As I understand it, the ASP is a really good, Jack of All trades ship. A middle-heavy ship for somebody who wants to do equal parts exploring, hauling and NPC bounty hunting. I don't think I'd ever want to PvP in one, though, as they seem to be mercilessly expensive to repair and maintain. God knows how expensive the Anaconda is to fuel and repair.

I've always figured the Anaconda's costs were justified much more so than they ASP's though. Once you get a 150 million credit battleship, I'd think you're more or less out of things to spend your credits on. So long as you "only" spend ~100,000 credits per day on upkeep costs, you'd still be making a tidy profit bounty hunting or whatnot in the comfort and style of the largest ship in the game.

I think people seem to have forgotten that the Cobra is not a Combat role oriented craft. It is a multirole ship. So The gap for Combat is Eagle > Viper > Nothing

That's what I meant by a combat ship between the Cobra and Asp - a pure combat ship in the same vein as the earlier two. It'll likely be quite something if it happens.

I think at least a couple of the upcoming 5 ships will be Imperial since we've currently only got the clipper and the orca.

Would you call the clipper and dropship multirole or combat?

The Clipper is a trade ship, the dropship is primarily an armoured personnel carrier, but since there is no such thing as personnel in game set (aside from slaves in canisters), it counts as an armed and armored transporter.

Cool... Not flown either of them yet. Sounds like the dropship's the logical step up for me from the cobra then since I treat it as an armed trader/bounty hunter/smuggler.

I thought there were meant to be 25 playable ships + 5 additional ones?

I'll admit I'm out of the loop so might have misread something somewhere along the lines.

Dropship is probably where I'll go as well until I can get a Conda in the far distant future. And even though the Cobra isn't a "combat specialized" ship, it has the same hardpoints and general module classes as the Viper, with somewhat better turning but somewhat worse speed.

It's just such an awkward berth of cost. You could fully outfit four Cobras with A ratings on all modules before you could buy even a baseline Federal Dropship (43 million, last time I looked)

We don't have even full 25 set yet, those new 5 ones will come long way after release (most likely spring). And no, we don't know any specs or roles.

Yah it's hell expensive... for that price you'd want it to be significantly better than the cobra and I'm yet to be convinced (though would be happy to be) that it is.

I hope the Clipper will be a combat-focused murder machine.

I strongly suspect the ship you're looking for there will be the Imperial Courier rather than the Clipper. It was the single most popular ship in the old games, I really can't see them not including it in ED.

We have 15 ships right now. There were supposed to be 25 at first and later 5 more, so there are still 15 ships missing. Though if E: D is a long term supported game i don't think there will be an upper limit at all for ships. But the remaining 15 ships will certainly take a long time, as in 2 years from now, until all 30 are in game, minimum.

Asp is great as a first strike craft, but if you get in a dogfight with something more manoeuverable you'll struggle (unless you're comfortable flitting FA on/off).
