Newcomer / Intro Are the number of missions needed for each Faction Rank the same?

I have just started the Federation Rank grind and I went from Cadet to Midshipman in about ten missions. So I am wondering are the rest of the levels going to be about the same or am I going to need a greater number of missions at each level?

As an example, is going from Midshipman to Petty Officer about the same number of missions as going from Post Captain to Rear Admiral .

And if they need more missions, is the increase linear or log?

UPDATE: levels seem to be about 15% more difficult than the previous level.

OMG! Now I see why people complain about Faction Rank Grind. I will just stick with the Anaconda then.

Thank you. :)

The thing to do is, as with all other aspects of the game, just continue to play and do the things you enjoy and after a while you will notice that you are at 100% of some rank or navy missions start to appear and with no grind at all you have risen in the ranks.

If you like missions and also like some of the very high money earning activities you can accelerate things using donations, large traceless donations are still popular 1300 odd years in the future.

Exactly.
Being able to avoid grinding and simply do what you enjoy is a rare skill in Elite. But in my opinion it's the one that is more important than any other, the piloting itself included.

I have thousands of hours in Elite and still going not because I'm a good pilot, but because I never let the game frustrate me.

You can of course minimise the effort required to gain ranks by selecting missions for the best reputation reward (and choosing that reward) - so +++++ missions are your friend if you really want that 'vette or Cutter. ;)

But but.. what if you want to grind for rep and mats at the same time?! 😭

Thank guys. I appreciate the advise and support. :)

Steam says I have 200+ hours in the game and I was only FedRank "Cadet". So, it appears my preferred play style does not naturally go to whatever it is that gets faction rank. I will look into donations. Is there a thread that estimates how much the total cost of ranking is?

Don't know if anybody compiled it into a nice spreadsheet. I don't think it's even possible, because how variable it is, mission to mission.

But as a rule of thumb, the last few ranks before Cutter are on average about 1% per mission. Or it at least feels like it.

At that time I wanted the corvette a lot. So I spent about a week doing data transport/courier missions in type 6 payed with rep++++ between several federation systems, taking missions from federation faction. The activity was in use later when I needed faction reputation to unlock engineer, I already had it. That happened by coincidence.

I kept going with the Federation Ranking Grind and I just made Rear Admiral! Here is what I found.

I spent a few days doing rescue missions at a damaged station in a Type-9, and ranked up two levels. I then went to Ochosi and did Data Missions in my Diamondback Explorer. My impression was that each level was about the same difficulty as the last. However, when comparing results from earlier levels to later levels there was a definite difference. For example Level 11 took longer than Level 4. When averaging these data, the levels seem to be about 15% more difficult than the previous level. As I played a mission type I got better at it, so the increased difficulty was balanced by my improved technique.

Congratulations, enjoy the Corvette! Be careful with it though: when well outfitted it is a beast when you know how to use it. Just out of the factory it is more fragile than you'll think though!
