A question on the SubReddit, a person is struggling to find a PS5 and is tempted to get the PS4 version if he can't find one.
I know the digital copies of Planet Coaster's console edition are bundled together, but the disk owners only had a limited time to claim the other version I think, so I'm curious as the direction we're going.
Of course none of this actually matters until pre-orders, when the info is available anyway, but it's just nice to know these things ahead of time.
It should be observable from the PSN store itself. Right now, the game is labeled as 'Just announced', and usually when preorders are ready, the store would update with the platfroms the game is able to run on.
From what I have experienced with my PS Library of games, games that launch on both platforms at the same time would often have the upgrade for free, without any time limit to make the claim. The only restriction I know of is that you need the PS4 disc to run the PS5 version of the game, and you get access to the PS5 version by simply putting in the disc, the PS5 would read that disc and say 'Free PS5 Upgrade' if that is available, where you could then download that version and use the PS4 disc as a key to access it.
The only time I observed the free upgrade to the PS5 version is not available is if the 9th gen upgrade was delivered after the 8th gen's version was released. Usually it is up to the publishers whether or not the upgrade is free, usually it is for games like Crash Bandicoot 4, Star Wars jedi Fallen Order, and Final Fantasy 7 remake. Otherwise, the game may cost the player to get the PS5 version by certain methods. Either a purchasable upgrade like Tony Hawk Pro Skater 1+2, a bundle like Spiderman Remastered (only available alongside Spiderman Miles Morales Deluxe edition), to only be free by purchasing a specific PS4 edition like Control Ultimate edition, or flat out buy the PS5 version as its own game like Judgement.
I think Jurassic World Evolution 2 would be available on both platforms like how Planet coaster did, provided that new games that are launching on both 8th and 9th gen platforms simultaneously are offering the upgrade for free on PSN. The safest way too tell if the upgrade is for free is to see if the game would have the boxed [PS4] & [PS5] label next to the game, which would indicate that you are purchasing both versions of the game.
So I say wait it out and see what the store has in store. If both labels are present, PS4 players could get the game and play it, and upgrade to the PS5 version once they got the new system at no additional cost. It is how I bought the pre-order of Planet Coaster when I only had the PS4. Only when I got my PS5 did I download the PS5 version of that game at no additional cost.
