Sounds like a stupid question but its something I have been trying to figure out. I just recently bought my Cobra III and have been slowly, thanks to a nice in-system trade run that nets around 30k credits for a round trip at the moment, which takes about 5 minutes, I've been slowly but surely upgrading my ship. I have the second-best Friendship Drive you can get in the Cobra (A 4B) a power-core that's putting out 11 MW of juice and new power distribution systems. I've been saving weapons for last since I'm trading mostly, but I've discovered that the High Tech station in system doesn't have anything gruntier than a 'Rank E' weapon. Is that the highest rank there is right now for Class 2 guns or should I go out looking for better? And what combination of station traits (High pop+High Wealth+High Tech I thought was the best combo) should I be looking for to get better weapons?

Really? What ratings have you found? Personally I thought rating didn't matter for weapons.
Leesti/George Lucas has a C plasma accelerator and a B railgun!
I would *like* at least a Class 2 Rank D/C Beam Laser, I'm in Pi Piscis Austrini right now (an Imperial system not far from Sanna or Durius) and one of the stations in system *IS* a high-tech station but its an agg station as well so I'm guessing that combo not so good for better weapons.
I have Class 2/D Beams; have never seen anything higher than that for Class 2 Beams. I've seen D-rated rail guns here and there; Plasma Accelerators are also in that B-D range.

Class 2/C beam laser's don't exist I believe. Class is size of the weapon and needs a same size or larger mount. Rating works a bit different in weapons than other things (all shield sizes have A ratings, all weapon sizes do not)
Rating is how good a weapon it is basically, how much damage it can do. So only the larger weapons can get up to the higher ratings that do more damage.
There is a class 3/C beam weapon but you will need a larger ship.

Ah true, but I think a B railgun is a higher class than a D one.
In general I don't think i've seen the same weapon with different ratings. By same weapon I mean type, class and firing mode (fixed/gimbal/turret).
Has anyone seen, for example, a fixed class 2 multicannon with any rating better than E?

No, you can get for example a Class 2D Beam laser, but for pulse laser you can only get E for class 2 hardpoints.
For a railgun you can actually get a class 2B.

There is exactly one weapon of each type. If it's a Size 2 gimballed Multicannon, it is F. There is no E you can upgrade to.
If it's a size 1 fixed Beam Laser, it is E. There is no D you can upgrade to.
If it's a size 1 fixed Pulse Laser, it is F. No upgrade.
So yes, the 2B Railgun is the highest "quality" weapon you can fit on the Cobra, but that doesn't really mean it's the best weapon.
