Are these dust storms?

I noticed some planets have these smaller brownish storms, are they dust storms?

I believe they're supposed to be lava domes. The only tip-of-the-hat the game currently has to actual volcanoes.

I would be prepared to wager that all the planets on which they appear have "major volcanism" on them.

I think it is not dust storms. If you fly close to atmosphere you can notice some surface elements.

Yeah, I thought the ones I saw looked a lot like the atmospheric storms, but the feature in your screen doesn't so much. Maybe they're volcanism features like Sapyx said.

This particular one has "Minor Metallic Magma Volcanism". I'll check the next ones I find to see if a pattern emerges.

I'd posted similar ones before, wondering what they were. Those were a bit larger than the ones shown here so far I think. Here:

The planet featured major volcanism, and it featured sulphur, so the consensus was that those yellow spots were sulphur volcanoes. Should be something similar in this case.

At first, I had also suspected those spots to be some weird kind of storm clouds. :)

Those look pretty cool!

If they are lava domes, it must be one hell of a volcano judging by the size of the vent. From the looks of the ones in the picture by @GrandAdmiralThrawn, it's almost like they have central peaks in each of the centers... which would have me think they more look like impact craters.

One thing I also noticed is that all planets with this features have atmospheres, so maybe that's how impact craters look on planets with atmosphere, as I also haven't seen this feature appear simultaneously with the more common impact crater type we see on worlds with no atmosphere.

I believe the reason for this to be very simple. If those massive things would exist on worlds without any atmosphere, then those worlds could probably be landable as well. And that means that somebody would've had to implement and design actually awesome volcanism on the surfaces of those worlds for us to see up close.

But no thing such as "awesome volcanism" exists on any landable world I've ever seen. ;)
