I was wondering, when comparing an old ship from "First encounter" or "Elite II" to ships in Elite dangerous by using ship "shapes...
Isn't the Boa (Elite II) and the Corvette (Elite Dangerous) the same ship? I'm using shape comparison since that is what Frontier did to differentiate or distinguish one ship from another on the PC when Elite II was released.
The Boa and the Corvette aren't related as far as I can tell.
In the original 1984 Elite, the Boa was an improved version of the Python, being smaller than its predecessor while also having a larger cargo capacity and requiring less crew. This was changed in FE2 and FFE, where the Boa was a freighter that was bigger than the Anaconda. Not being affiliated with any of the major superpowers, the Boa was built in independent shipyards. Shape-wise, it resembles a pointier Anaconda.
On the other hand, the Corvette is much more of a combat oriented ship in service with the Federal Navy. It's overall shape is reminiscent of a significantly larger Python with less tapering towards the bow.
The Boa and the Corvette are not in the same class of ship, nowhere close to being the same shape, and built by completely different factions. I would think it is safe to say that the Boa and the Corvette aren't the same ship.
Same argument goes for panther clipper (Elite II) and type 9 (Elite dangerous), when comparing ship shape comparison between the two games.
The Type 9 and Panther Clipper are not the same ship. There is some concept art from the ED kickstarter showing early concepts of the Panther Clipper (also known as the Panther LX) which look absolutely NOTHING like the Type 9.
The Panther Clipper is in a state of development limbo being confirmed for ED while seemingly not getting any developer time in the last 4 years. It's a shame really, I know a lot of people really want to get their hands on one.
