Newcomer / Intro Are turret weapons any good?

So, I'm slowly saving up for my viper (or maybe a cobra) and I figured it would be cool to get 4 turrets on it so I could focus on just flying and let them guns shoot themselves but I remember seeing some beta videos of turrets and they were shooting all over the place, hardly ever hitting the target even when the player was trying to aim them properly. have they improved recently?

I tried three pulse turrets on my Eagle and they were totally useless. I had to manually set them to forward fire and then hit my target once to make them fire on their own after setting them back to "target only" and it took ages to kill an Adder. Maybe it was because they were low rank weapons, maybe it's because they're better for having a ton of them on the bigger ships, but I personally do not like them.

Short answer; no turrets are useless IMO. Get some gimballed weapons. They'll "autoaim" as long as the target is in front of you, leaving you with more focus on flying. Once you get a Viper, consider getting some fixed weapons, they totally rock on the Viper and they can't be disrupted by chaff/ecm :)

Turrets are more useful on the less maneuverable ships, & depending on the hardpoint layout. For example: the Adder has a dorsal (top) hardpoint, so a turret there would cover attacks from above & behind.
If you ever meet an Imperial Clipper with turrets, just run away (like I did, lol) because you can't get out of it's arc(s) of fire.

Try to combine weapons. Let's analyze a pvp combat. Every PvP starts at some distance. Since both ships will get close, try to use this distance to drop the shields on target before you get face to face. Use gimbaled lasers for this and when you are close to enemy, use some fixed weapon (railguns or multicanons) and tear them apart.

Turrets are useful in some of the bigger ships with less manoeuvrability. I have a type 6 (which turns like an aged celebrity on Strictly Come Dancing) with a pair of turreted lasers. Woe betide a Sidey which interdicts me for my cargo...

Note that gimballed weapons are near essential in the cobra's lower hard points. A sidewinder or even another cobra only has to turn 90 degrees to fly between them otherwise.

I have to agree with the other replies. Gimbled weapons are great, but if you're flying a smaller ship with all the hardpoints located at the front of the ship don't bother with Turrets.

I played with turrets on the underside of my cobra and kinda liked them. One beam turret and one multi cannon turret, combined with a fixed beam and gimballed multi cannon on the big slots, it worked quite well.

It let's you keep up constant fire if your target over flies you.

Just make sure they are not set on 'fire at will'.
