Are voice packs worth it?

Yes. Yes they are.

Especially when you inadvertently mutter to yourself and William Shatner keeps piping up with inane chat (no idea what he thinks I keep saying)... I don't actually use VoiceAttack to control anything about the ship, that's all done from HOTAS... But it does add some amusement. Keep meaning to dig out my Brian Blessed pack...

I wish I was English like my hero Tj.
To be a little more verbose:

I only own one voicepack (Orion) and I've had a blast with it ever since I got it. It really does add to the immersion. There are a few things that Voice Attack and the HCS voice pack profile make easier (like requesting docking) but you don't really get a voice pack for an 'edge' but to enjoy the dialog and interaction.

Orion, too, has a nice little nebular tour that you can do. For a non-explorer like myself it motivated me to get out of the bubble a bit and do some exploring.

Eden is lovely with a delightful Norwegian accent, the lovely Idun Vik - Verity is our own Verity Croft (ship's computer voice). I couldn't contemplate the torture that must ensue from having Shatner drone on but some like him.

Why not look at some of the yootoob videos of them to decide if you like the sounds?

EDIT - In case it isn't crystal clear, yes I think they are very good value. ;)

I would get VA but I don't think I would hear anything over my large metal collection. Hehe.

Is there a voice pack that is a screaming metal singer?

I have voice Attack and two Packs... and think it completes the Game...

But you have to have a good mike or you will hate the experience...

I have the Obsidian Ant voice pack. I'd say it was worth it. I use it to control a few things that aren't mapped to my (limited) joystick buttons: Request Docking, SuperCruise (specifically, as opposed to activate FSD), that sort of thing.

Really? I was thinking about getting that one! Why didn't you like it?

It is advertised as funny and profane, it is neither. Except for the occasional F-bomb it simply insults you, John DeLancie's performance is wooden, sounds like he is reading his lines into a telephone. I think if I could do it again I would get the "Astra" voice=pack but you do not get to try any of them before you buy and when I asked about exchanging the "ELI" voice pack my email was simply ignored.

So much yes!

I really enjoy interacting with my ship, and much of the macro/scripted commands are narrated. Shatner for a co-pilot (or ship AI, depending on my mood) is great. I'm not even a huge trekky but it adds so much to the interaction with your ship.

Hmm. Did you try their forums or their Discord?

Well, thanks for you opinion on the pack. I'll have to think about it before I choose my next one. I'm interested to see how they do with their new Singularity profile coming out this month:

I keep thinking about getting one of these, but then I remember that the only thing I would use it for is to quickly redistribute Pips.

Since my primary focus is not Combat, I can't justify the cost, or the time to get it set up, even though both of those are minor.

Edit to add: I think a really nice QoL improvement from Frontier would be the ability to hotkey a few personalized Pip arrangements. Just a few would be enough, I think.

I find it extremely useful for automating repetitive tasks I have trouble remembering such as HONKing every system I pass through with the advanced discovery scanner. I simply tell the program "Explorer Jump" and the ship jumps to the next system and automatically HONKs it, leaving me free to scoop fuel and fly the ship. I passively earn millions of extra credits in exploration data this way. Also helpful to quickly request docking ("Request Dock"), deploy or retract weapons, target objects/ships/subsystems ("Target Power Plant"), etc. etc. as well as pip management and many other tasks.

As another poster noted you will need a good microphone. I purchased a Logitech G933 wireless surround sound headset with built-in boom microphone and I can tell you it is the Shizzle. Shakes my ears. o7

Obsidian Ant has a great YouTube video in which he plays one of the storyline based voice-packs. Interesting but IMO it just does what we all do, just in a scripted fashion. Great for those who need to be directed. I am not a follower and so am, so far, not interested in that. o7
