Are you bored of this game? Nobody to play with? Join a decent squadron! What are you waiting for?

So many threads citing nothing to do in the game.

Look, I get that a LOT of this game is painfully boring, I do. I really, really do. Oh god, I'm thinking about Improvised Components again. Begone foul thoughts!!

But when you play with people, real people, people that know the game inside out, that know of the gameplay opportunities out there, that have the wherewithal to CREATE interesting events and content for their squadron members, to generate investment in shared goals and camaraderie, and I'm gonna say it, I can't believe I'm gonna say it...develop a personal....er.....na....na....na....it's difficult, give me a second, the words kinda get stuck...personal narr....narrrra......NARRATIVE!

If I started to write my CMDRs personal na...narr....meh, just for 2019, I would be writing 5000 words plus, and while obviously as CO, I have my finger in every pie, I know that this is the same for some of our pilots. Even those that just pop up now and again know they can get solid shipbuilding advice, share a story from an exploration trip, call us out to teach some ganker a lesson, anything anyone can imagine and can share can be enjoyed.

Proper squadrons (not Bill and Ben's Space Weed Conglomerate which is 5 pilots) are connected, have coalitions, allies, nemeses, arch enemies, politics, drama (not internal, at least not us), there is a whole metagame ABOVE the game which gives every boring action you do IN the game, at minimum a different flavour, but at best an actual purpose. A feeling of achievement (or at least that fuzzy feeling of trying your best and failing honorably), and in large squadrons you'll find people like you and others totally unlike you, you'll see the game through others eyes and in some cases you'll wonder how you could have been blind for so long! Our youngest is 14, our oldest is over 60, our best pilot could hold his own against any other and our worst couldn't fight his way out of a wet paper bag in a full frag T10, there's no pressure to achieve something which a lot of people fear. Oh, if I join this prestigious squadron I'll have to jump through this hoop and that hoop...perhaps in some, but not all.

I don't want to make this a huge post and it's not in any way shape or form an advert for my squadron, it's an advert for ALL squadrons. I just want to articulate how many people have come to MY squadron and after some time said 'this squadron saved Elite for me, I would have quit long ago', I'm sure many other squadrons can claim the same. Until you get on board, you can't know where the best content exists in this game, provided you are willing to play socially (and I'm cool with the fact that many Elite players do not want that). Even our guy who VRs and can never talk cos of the baby in the next room manages to surprise me now and again and share in a goal or two. Love you Salter! :D

So yeh, don't wait for yourself to get bored, get help! Think of it as free group therapy!! :D

What if I'm an antisocial, introvert, very casual and infrequently playing with patologic shyness on the border of social anxiety CMDR? I would like to get into some community but from joining one stops me above. Over the internet I can write on forums and such. Having more direct interactions is very stressfull. I once participated in wing cargo delivery mission with complete strangers, VoIP included. Although it was interesting from the social POV, interactions and casual talk; it was also very taxing and after we finished I was exhausted.

As I said, I get that and I'm not judging you for it. Naturally joining a squadron is worthless if you do not wish to interact in any way whatsoever with other players, but I can't imagine anyone getting stressed at gard. If we were any more relaxed we'd fall over. ;)

I almost shot you a personal invite yesterday, I love the shipbuilding you are undertaking and I actually WANT to help you with it. If you feel like taking the risk, just hit me up. :)

I can totally back up what The Fox has said in this thread opener - I would have quit playing full time if it wasn't for my friends in the squadron and minor faction!! Getting together with a group of real players didn't just transform the game for me, it massively expanded it too!

Give this a go if you're cheesed off with things, it may be exactly what you have been consciously or subconsciously looking for? No harm in trying, right?!

No worries with judging - IRL issues made me somewhat impervious to other's judgement. It may sound rude but I don't care about other's judgement anymore.

That;s the biggest problem I have. I can join no problem, tho I may not be the most active member. In time I and others may see me as a dead weight. So what's the point of joining in the first place i fone is not willing to participate, right?

Ah, thanks for the kind words about the invite. Your willingness is noted and greatly appreciated.

Tho few months ago (sohrtly after GARD launched) we already had some discussion about me joining your squad. We ended agreeing about not agreeing about affiliations. AFAIR you're Federal oriented while I'm neutral with slight Imperial lean.

So, if you want to work on a tough nut (both social and political), I'm open for sugesstions ;)

Hmmm, it is tempting and I do like much of what you write on here Ashen...

I'm getting the ED itch again (I need some aloe gel for that) after a few months away, I even updated the game the other night....but sigh it's ED, I've been through this so many times. It's like getting back with your ex, all exciting at first, then you realise why you left and the malaise sets in, then the cycle starts...anger (at all the stuff that's still broken), confusion at how they managed to make a meh game when it could be so great, followed by disappointment, then apathy....and quit.

I'm pathologically adverse to PVP and engineering so I think maybe I wouldn't be quite right for GARD....top respect for what your guys are doing though...keep it up

Can you point us to examples of the things that your squadron does?
Firstly, this thread isn't really about my squadron despite me talking about it a lot, it's only for example sake. However, I do want to answer your question, I hope the mods don't consider it self promotion, though, cos this thread is a reaction to all the doom posts saying there's nothing to do in the game.

Officially, we have two main arms...BGS for the Federation, which is VERY casual for us, it's more a kind of RP thing, most of our players are 100% casual and cannot be relied upon to participate in goals etc and that's fine, I don't want ANYONE to feel obligated to do ANYTHING except be a nice guy and respect others if they want to wear GARD tags. Having said that, there are always goals to work towards, wars to be fought, systems to flip, etc. But the focus of our main players, and what we are rapidly becoming known for, is being a top level pvp group. We are enforcers, lawful, we fight griefers and outlaws, protecting hotspots. GARD SBS is our Elite special forces unit and currently has 5 members. It is posisble for anyonen to rise through the ranks and become an SBS member with dedicatoin to the art of pvp, but there is no pressure on anyone to do anything, firs tand foremost, above all else, we are friends who have a laugh and exchange ideas and experiences on our discord as well as frequently meet up for all kinds of shenanigans. We are important members of botht he lawful coalitions of PvP pilots.

Most often lately, is pvp practice in extreme places and canyon racing (also combat canyon racing!), such as planet surfaces, canyons, extremely dense ice rings, etc. We aren't even very Fed (@Shiro Akai ) but we are certainly more Fed than anything else, simply because Sol is a Federation system and nothing is more important than Earth. :)

So some bullet points, what we do...

BGS work, missions, etc, exploratoin data drops
BGS Wars (flipping systems, etc)
PvP enforcement
Canyon racing
Theorycrafting (several of us are amongst the best shipbuilders in the game, of that I can assure you, it is probably our greatest strength)
Joking about on the discord
...and everything else...

Thanks man, and indeed, we aren't the best fit for everyone, we are very engineering and combat oriented (at least our core players are), although we have plenty of pilots who do no combat whatsoever. I think Elite is big enough now that any pilot can find a squadron to fit. Good luck!!

I'll probably have another try at convincing you soon, but I need to shift the focus of this thread away from GARD itself cos this isn't the recruitment area and I don't mean to step on toes. ;)

Except there are, to my knowledge, no major SnR squadrons, which is what spurred me into making my own.
That's awesome. I've heard a lot of people saying they want more SnR stuff. How do you find the stuff that FD implemented around SnR in 3.2 was it? Or is it very much a case of doing your own RP with USS scenarios and comp navs and stuff lke that? Now you mention it, lately I've been hanging around in the hazres and waiting for a miner to get attacked and trying to save them. :) Could that be considered SnR? I guess not, really, more like police work with a rescue componenet. :D

I can't speak for other squadrons, but we have a policy of never demoting or expelling anyone who properly followed the joining instructions, even if they never show up on the discord or talk to anyone in game. We understand some people just want to wear the tags of a cool squadron and that's all they want. I have no issue with that as long as they represent our values in open of friendship and respect.

I agree, joining a group - dunno about squadrons - gave group dynamic purposes the game itself can't deliver. In my case it dint help when engineers hit the stage - what good is my vanilla gear when everybody else in the group can crash stuff in seconds where I have to spend minutes pulling the trigger? I did quite some coop combat before 2.1, but I dont see how that is fun when you just have useless stuff to contribute.

What are these "people" you speak of?

When I want to play a game with other people, I fire up Overwatch or Fortnite or DCUO or [insert typical multiplayer game], and the game will put me in a match with dozens if not hundreds of other players in under a minute. I don't need Discord and INARA and a specific time and date on the calendar, I just fire up the game and play. The closest thing Elite has to this is the CG, where I might be able to join a wing in a HazRes for some mindless bounty fishing. These days I find this more boring than playing solo (which is different than playing IN Solo).

Oh, and there is CQC, but it's dead and not my thing.

I get what you are saying. For people with the time and flexibility and friends who play Elite to set up their own 'matches', I'm sure this is fun. But for many of us, it is nontrivial and ultimately not worth the hassle.

It's far more organic than that in elite. I play overwatch, I was a known wow player, and I'll take my squadrons brand of emergent content over playing with cheating foul mouthed teenagers with no skill, any day of the week. ;)

You can just tag along - not every group has mandatory events. I bet most are laid back, have some short term goal (crush imperials e.g.) for everyone to work on and whether you actually join in MP is up to you. Saying "Hi." is polite, tho when you happen to see your ppl online.
