Are you Elite Dangerous?

Edit: Bill Turner is grade 5 sensor capable too, so don't panic into a killing frenzy to get access to Lori Jameson, Bill Turner will do just fine.

What? Well, chances are that if you're an Explorer your exploration rank is high and your combat rank is somewhere below clueless.

Why am I mentioning the combat rank here? Well, when 2.3 goes live there's a long awaited Engineer modification, the lightweight mod for the Sensors. The beta has shown reductions of over 79%. That is a very significant reduction and will buy you a few additional Ly's jump range. Now here's the catch: The engineer is Lori jameson and Lori is situated in Shinrarta Dezhra which requires an Elite rank (or Founder) as permit. Additionally, Lori will only speak with you if your combat rank is Dangerous or higher. Luckily you already have an Elite rank in exploration (right?, right?), so that's your access to Shinrarta Dezhra.

So what about the combat rank then? Yes, there's no way around it, you have destroy ships if you want to rank up in combat for those lightweight sensors.

"But I'm an explorer and I suck at combat!"
Indeed, but then I have this suggestion for you: Unsuck in combat and be quick about it, wing up with other explorers also in your shoes, battle ready your ExploraConda (add SLFs), go to a HazRes, Compromised Nav Beacon, or even Combat zones and start the carnage. 2.3 will nerf the stacking of Massacre missions to 3 max, so your added bonus for doing stacked Massacre missions will drop significantly in 2.3.

PS: Could not resist the title of this thread, it seemed appropriate.

Aren't there two engineers that have this mod?

I've been reluctant to rank up Combat since the higher your rank, the high the rank of NPCs that interdict you.

Correct me if I've understood something wrong here but doesn't Bill Turner also do it?

[*]New blueprints added to:
  • Bill Turner:
    • DSS to grade 1, and sensor/scanner to grade 5
  • Juri Ishmaak:
    • Sensor/scanner to grade 4, and DSS to grade 2
  • Lei Chung:
    • Sensor/scanner to grade 2, and DSS to grade 2
  • Lori Jameson:
    • Sensor/scanner to grade 5, and DSS to grade 5
  • Tiana Fortune:
    • DSS to grade 5, and sensor/scanner – 5

I also go to Turner for Lightweight Life Support mod, Even though Lori is a grade higher.

I'm Master (62%) / Entrepreneur (79%) / Ranger (76%), so not long to go till Dangerous.

Plus I'm lucky to have the "free" Founders World permit some people got.

But I'm still not really interested in the whole RNGeers stuff, but the new blueprints might change that :)

A valid concern.

That is true, Lori is however grade 5 capable.

I just reached dangerous before i decided to do my hauler trip to m67, so this won't apply to me, but yeah, for dedicated explorers, get your combat ranks up. If you're willing to invest some time, go modify up some ship as much as you can. I'm almost finished modifying my anaconda (running bi-weaves + rapid fire multicannons + boosters) and i can say even for someone as incompetent in combat as me, it makes it very easy to grind up rank, so much so that i expect to be deadly by may.

So what do we need to get access to Bill? Anything more than Friendly with the Alliance and mine 500T of ore?
How long would it take to Mine 500T if you haven't mined anything yet?

I am exactly that: Elite and Dangerous :) Had to kill silly number of ships (thanks my trusty Cutter!) in CZs to get my rank from Competent to Dangerous. Hated that engineer who had this requirement...

Well, if you already have the Anaconda, mining 500t of anything will be pretty quick. I went to Delkar to get the 10t of Painite.

For Bill it's 50 T of Bromellite, mined in ice rings. Can be done in one or two play sessions depending on ship. Not sure if less than pristine reserves effect it much.

Also, you need the Alioth System Permit, and Friendly with Alliance as mentioned.

Pretty easy to obtain the Alioth system permit as the Alioth Independents control 78 ursae majoris and quite a lot of the nearby systems.

EDIT: Actually i believe frontier listed them as the second biggest minor faction in the game after the sirius corp in a newsletter

Doesn't Tiana Fortune have the set as well? You don't need much of an Empire rank to get the Achenar permit, although I forget how to unlock her.
The other question is how much of a compromise are you prepared to make on the other stats? I think the fast scan and long range DSS scan mods both increase the mass? It's probably not much of an issue with most ships (it only has a mass of 1.3t to start with) but it depends on how borderline your build is... . I might try a lvl 1 mod and see if I get a decent secondary effect, materials permitting.

Just waiting for 2.3 to drop. Already doing a shakedown cruise of the new ExploraConda to stuff it all in to.
Shaving the 50 odd tons off of it's sensors should allow it to carry the lvl 5 DSS, SRV, mining laser, minimal shielding...and still get way over 60ly

Yep, I got that permit when I was a newbie. It was my first permit after Sol.

Yeah I noticed that and was gonna go to Tiana if I was also getting a DSS mod. I just didn't mention it because the patch notes said "- 5" instead of grade 5. I assume it means the same but it's not perfectly clear.

I have both Tiana and Bill unlocked and at max rep so either one will do. I'll probably go for Tiana if I do the DSS. Can't decide between speed and range. Otherwise I'll go for Bill as he's closer to where all my ships are.

Can't decide between speed and range.

choose the one that does not increase weight ... oh, wait ...

i'm too late to this thread... elte:elite:elite:helpless. for those of you. who intend to raise their combat rank for the grade 4 life support, my tip is: compromised nav beacons. take a pve optimised FDL or similar, and shoot elite eagles and elite sideys and elite adders there ... a lot of them.
