So newsletter 33 seems to have upset a few folk with what appears to be the introduction of micro transactions for the purchasing of ship skins in beta 1.

I thought it was inevitable that a poll would be created for discussing this, so I decided that I would be the one to do it, and that I would make a fairly straight forward one.

Personally I was expecting MTs of some kind because FD are going to need some form of steady income in order to keep the servers up and running, and to maintain a steady flow of updates. With this in mind I am pleased to see that they seem to be steering clear of pay-to-win style MTs, but I would hope that most of the in-game products available to purchase in the online store would also be available to purchase with in-game credits.

Edit: Apologies for posting a poll that has already been put up elsewhere. I only searched the general and beta sub forums. Bit of a forum noob here :D

As long as they don't go down the route like World Of Tanks and have better ammo only avaliable through the shop.

They even suckered a load of people in by charging £5 for the "premium" version of the game which gave bonus gold and xp per match.

So I am in favour IN PRINCIPLE but they will need to state clearly what they will be charging for.

I am fine with cosmetics, Voice packs, bobbleheads, HUD's, exhaust and beam colours being purchasable - as long as they are purely cosmetic.

Anything that offers an advantage is right out.

That is what killed LOTRO for me - "convenience, not advantage" from the store was a farce.

Not too fussed. A good pilot will smoke a noob even if he has all the toys. Financial investment will never be a substitute for time investment and skill development.

Buying upgrades with MTs just destroys the game experience IMO. You only get the buzz when you have to grind.

I played Mafia Wars and ran a clan for a year or so and invested a frankly shocking amount of money into skill points that enabled me to stomp on pretty much everyone. Then i got stomped when the big dogs started throwing ever more outrageous amounts of money at it. It was just point and click - no skill required, just lots of money.

Fortunately Elite requires a LOT of skill..

I bought a lot in Rise of Flight using micro transactions but only what I wanted. Larger updates can mean you pay for things you may not be interested in or actually want.

This has been on the cards for months. It was thoroughly discussed in the DDF.

It will never be part to win, just cosmetic stuff.

This is not a new subject.
I think there's even a poll already (or several)?

Why wouldn't it be okay to sell cosmetic items?
Why would it upset anyone?

Nope im not, i've always had a hate for them. i think games should have all the features already in game an used with in game money only. i'm ok with True expansion packs, but DLC's and micro-transaction have kinda been a bane of gaming

Cosmetics from a real money shop is ok in my book.

Since I like my ships to look good and don't mind pushing some more money into FD's hands (even more?) I'll gladly pay to have my Eagle sprayed in some nice pattern!

There are at least 4 started in the DDA alone.

Ah oops, fairly new to the forum here and although I did search to see if there was any existing polls on the subject, I didn't search the DDA... in fact thus far I have completely overlooked the DDA, I'll have to keep an eye on it.

Cheers

Since RMTs were announced very long ago, I'm guessing it's mostly newcomers to the forums who'd be surprised by their existence. Or maybe uninformed fanatics who've white knighted Elite over Star Citizen on the Internet by lording "no RMT1!" and now feel stupid for it.

The good news is that I've never seen any community except a few folks in this one angry with cosmetics only RMT, so this could be a great thing for the game. But bear in mind credits for RL money has also been mentioned long ago, so try not to have a heart attack if that gets announced in newsletter #48.

No, I hate them.

Its purely greed to use them and one step towards pay to win. 'hey guys!! look how many idiots bought our paint jobs, I know, lets make a new weapon or ship and charge them money for that too, these muppets will lap it up!'

If they want to have various paint-jobs, thats great but have them bought by in-game credits!

I'm completely ok with MT for cosmetics and fluff.

It is a proven and popular way to make extra cash without going down the hated pay-to-win road.
And given ED will not require a subscription to play, a cosmetics store may even prove to be a necessary step for FD to keep the game afloat.

I know I'll likely buy some neat paint jobs or bobbleheads

People already paid £200 to test the Alpha version of the game for free, so I don't see how a minor amount of money for skins you don't even need makes much of a difference.

Option 2 for me, if are "skins" and things like this, no problem, but i don't want see a newbie buying missiles for 20 € and one anaconda for 50 €...

I'll agree with this and yet I also hope we can get cool stuff, hopefully some of the coolest, by playing the game too. :)

There is a problem with your poll. Different people have different idea's of what P2W is. Mine is buying any advantage with real money over a person that does not pay. Even if the item is available in game its still P2W to me.

So the alpha perk was P2W (even if most people that purchased alpha didn't know it would be).

I have no problem with micro-transactions as long as they stay as cosmetic items only. Or account add-on's (char slot).
