Are you packing heat?

For the Regor project I carried no weapons, just so that I could keep up with other commanders out there. Now that the project is for the most part over, I'll be re-equipping the ship with a full loadout again, and battle-ready components.

Not that I'll be picking fights of course, but if I have to use them to fend off any smaller ships in order to survive, then I'll be doing well to have a good setup for the ship I am in that will help me in an unavoidable fight. A half-baked setup of ineffective weapons and inefficient support equipment is worse than no weapons at all: it is real dead weight that will not help you.

I carry good shields to protect me from attacks. I also carry good thrusters so I can outrun anything that can mass-lock me.
I don't carry weapons and in the Asp I have a 31.6 ly jump range. Works for me for now.

5D shields, 2 medium beams and reinforced armor. I know, I know, completely unnecessary. It's a psychological thing, I just can't get myself to treat deep space like there's nothing to worry about. ~30 LY range is enough for me right now.

And who knows what the future brings, maybe it's a good habit to get into...

I am waiting for the "Take you agenda-laden question and go, we don't need you shield and weapon-crazy types here, only security vessels should be allowed to fly armed, think of the children" - federation folks to show up. Luckily the Empire doesn't restrict your freedoms!

(Unless you're in debt. But then it's your fault that you're a slave for a bit)

;)

I explore in my A spec Asp complete with weapons...just in case. The only jigging around i do is replacing the cargo module with a decent fuel scoop. Iv got a 26.5 LY jump range....it works for me.

Nice to see I'm not the only one doing this. I thought this was very much frowned upon. I mostly use maximum jump range to get out of civ-space and then go to manual picking or economic route. So 26ly, 31ly or 36ly doesn't matter that much, to me anyway. Sure, if I decide to go Magellan on the galaxy I may very well change the setup to max out jump range.

I know that explorers usually aren't equipping any weapons to in keep their jump distance as high as possible. In my Cobra I was unarmed and ignored USS:s that popped up even in relative deep space. But with the Asp I have a few lasers, of course I will not be anyway near competitive in a real firefight but still hold my own against NPCs and maybe surprise a player just trying to pick an easy target on my way in or out of "civilized" space.

Also I quite like to have a few lasers ready to go, feels a little comfy. Sure I cut my range a little, but not that much. I can live with just over 30+ LY and feel that my ship is all that she can be.

Hell yes.
I'm a perimeter explorer, and having done that a few times I've learned that the few more light years in the jump range only makes about 100 -150 ly further out. if that's all I'm loosing, I'm coming armed.

This was a battle worthy warship (only 3a shields, that was my one concession) :5 beam laser turrets, military armor. I set out a month before any of the enforcement modules were available.. and I will be out 2 or more months.

If combat starts to happen out here, thargoids or what ever else.

My dieing in the wilderness won't be for lack of arms.
What ever challenges me will need to be at least as capable a warship; I would hate to think of being killed by some nut in a hauler with a single pulse laser, and me with no shields or weapons.

Based on the assumption that I am exploring, and when doing so have quite a lot of valuable data on board - carrying weapons is totally superfluous. The last thing I am going to do is pick a fight or turn around to engage, best strategy is to run as fast as you can and jump out of the system. Thus my equipment is entirely defensive. For that reason I carry shields and can boost away. A heatsink may confuse their weapons for a short while, but that's not why I carry them.

If the nature of the universe changes then I will review my strategy accordingly and maybe use the 'Conda for exploration.

Sooo.... in light of recent events in the galaxy core. Sure "Murder at SagA*" (trademark pending ;) ) was bound to happen sooner or later. It is a well defined spot in the galaxy which acts like the proverbial flame to the moth.
But the chance of bumping into an other person when exploring is basically zero.

I always pack heat in my (hopefully soon-to-be-upgraded) Cobra. In fact, for its size, my ship packs a decent punch. I figure you never know what you run into while out in the black. Then again, I have yet to try to push my ship to its maximum jump capacity. I also haven't made it well beyond the reach of the occasional pirate when in normal space exploring some planet's ring system either. I guess I try to act as if I were really out there venturing into the unknown. Shields are a must for me as well. If, someday, I head for the far side of the galaxy, I may have no choice but to sacrifice protection for range.

I am armed with some <really> harsh language and a heavy duty roo bar but not much else. My thinking is that poor armament is as good as no armament if I come up against another player and as for NPC's? well where I'm going there aren't any (unless I accidentally stumble across Braben's "other things") and closer to home I can just outrun them.

Its a good question. I was thinking of switching to solo instead.

The problem is if someone heads out into the black with the intent of hunting explorers then they are probably going to be better armed than an explorer carrying a couple of beams "just in case". The other problem of course if you get damaged its very hard to get any repairs. if they are on a suicide mission they don't care...

In 1.3 mines will get an overhaul and will deal both kinetic and thermal damage. Might be an explorers weapon of choice, run and just pump out mines for any pursuer.

My ship is as battle ready as it can be - my approach to exploration has always been "be prepared".... If I meet something I can't outrun, at least I have the chance of popping it.

I take a range hit, sure, but it's not awful, and doesn't restrict travel as much as people are convinced it does under standard exploration. A non standard jump range also means I jump distances "inside" what other pilots would on the same route, meaning that statistically I'm more likely to jump between discovered systems than into them :)
