Are you part of the Elite Dangerous Universe?

Should we have an ingame captains log or not?

If there is one accusation that can be leveled at Elite Dangerous in its current state its that it checks all the boxes that it's predecessors where loved for and enhances them. It's filled with things to do but..... and its a big BUT... it doesn't make you feel a part of the universe. In the eighties and nineties when books still reigned supreme and the use of the imagination within any framework was encouraged much like initiative is encouraged today one could get away with providing a framework for said imagination to be set free in.... and the frontier games were perfect for that. a galaxy to explore, things to do... and a novella to put you on the right path when use of imagination was called for. one kind of felt like you knew the furnishings of that structure, that station.... its denizens et all.

On the website the ad says make your own story.... and its an amazing galaxy, i've lived and breathed it since the premium beta, god knows just how many hours i have put into it.... unfortunately evry time i play i'm left with a feeling of unaccomplishment.... you see other than a healthy bank balance, a decent ship i'd be happy to fly for as long as the ED servers are still running(a python) i have no way of proving i ever did anything in this galaxy(ED).

Take xtar trek for instance... and i know its a TV show but bear with me.... every episode opens with captains log, stardate xxxxxxx..... and then there is an adventure. and despite evry bit of tech envisaged in the game and centuries of human maritime history throughout which every captain in essence kept a log... we don't have its equivelent in elite dangerous... i envisage entries that reflect say my performance in the last community goal.... my contribution reflected by say a letter of appreciation announcing me a s a hero maybe even giving me a medal to reflect thi... i know its just some backwater world/system but it was important enough that the big boys, the power players essentially fought an open /cold war there and its people based on me averaging out as one of the say top 15% of contributors decided i was a hero to them. All this reflected in the scrapbook/captans log not just as neat entries but maybe even links to images of aforementioned letters of appreciation, medals etc...

What do you guys(who bother to read this) think... should we have an in game captains log or not?

It's a nice idea and, it could add some flesh to the avatar. But, where do you fit this in the priority queue? I always find the trouble with these good ideas, is to fit them in the time line. When in development does/should this become a thing?

I don't know why people want everything to be in game.

Do we really need an in-game browser?
Here's my CMDRs log: http://inara.cz/cmdr/3414

Clans and comms.
Logs and fleet records.
We live in an age where having a browser open with a dozen tabs is just part of the game.

I would like a Firefox mod that uses the Elite colors.
I've got one for Teamspeak.

Athough I think it's a nice idea, I've voted No.

I already use the fantastic INARA website to write my logs, which are public. From these, I've widened my social circle in ED way beyond what I could in-game. I've even had other players help me with my character's goals after reading them, which is something I really didn't expect!

I wouldn't have been able to do any of that with an in-game log on the game client.

I voted yes, but I'd be happy with much less. Just a log of the systems I've been to and discovered, with the ability to add notes would be brilliant.

I'd simply like to see a little more system info in the main interface tabs. Even displaying 'economies' of stations when they are locked would be helpful.

Yes, I do think so.
It have proposed it myself long time ago.

Someone asked why it has to be in-game.
For me the answer is simple: Because it can be tied in with the universe map that way, which would be an enormous advantage.
I believe a captain's log would suck me even more into this game.
I would love to be able to tag remarkable systems, planets, moons and stations and add my own notes and reminders.
Of course a good search function would also be needed.

What I crave also is the ability to see which systems I visited in the starmap. That would be so cool.

I do not think this should be too difficult. It could mostly be text based. Notes could be stored in plain text files.

Oh, and please make sure we can back them up. I have already a few thousand hours invested in ED. Imagine the amount of personal notes this would generate. It would be awful to lose them in a crash.

Why would you vote no?
Nobody forces you to use a feature like that and others would love it.
You can simply keep doing things you are used too.

I would not want my notes to be public at all and I do not care about a social circle either.
I would never use a website because that forces me to alt tab out of the game.
I want it to be a total, all encompassing, in-game experience so to speak.
For me an in-game captain's log would be marvelous.

It would be a terrible overhead in terms of Moderation, Programming, Legals, Servers, bug chasing.

I really don't get why people want everything to be in the HUD.

A CMDR in 3302 would have forums, sites, newsfeeds, all sorts of things available.
On their device/phone/tablet whatever.

For me there is no out of game.
This post is happening in-game.
My whole browser is dedicated to Elite.

Inara is awesome.

Go register an INARA account and write some actual content in your flight log and impress us with what you have to say:

Here's Marra she sets the bar: http://inara.cz/cmdr/1355
Kr1spy is sometimes good: http://inara.cz/cmdr/7964
Lehman is worth a look: http://inara.cz/cmdr/3533
Arkadi is not bad: http://inara.cz/cmdr/7656
I'm occasionally funny: http://inara.cz/cmdr/3414

There's others too, You go write something worth reading.
If FDev ever implement your idea you'll have a back log of good content.

Write stuff that is so good that FDev WANT to put it in-game.

Otherwise it's just more noise on the forums.

I'm thinking of starting a poll suggesting that all game-idea polls have an in-built and mandatory voting option, along the lines of:

"I couldn't care less, but there are a myriad of other fixes, tweaks and enhancements that need to be completed long before <idea under discussion> should ever appear on the Design Review Board's agenda, at FDev towers"

And, for the avoidance of doubt, this is my vote.

I joined an in-game group. We've got our own thread in the appropriate sub-forum and all. I put my feeble attempts at writing in there for the amusement of my fellow group members.
Including entries that start "Ships Log; Personal. Commander Adept Geraden. 21:30 Hours. 9th January 3302."

If I put it anywhere else, how would the appropriate people ever find it.

So I vote no.

Id love to see a feature like this, and something i suggested would go well with this i think. Allowing others to see our achievements and log entries ect..

Commander Profiles:
(Bio's)

Flying though space we often see the lights of passing players, and yet it doesn't feel much like a community exists. Add a Bio section (with privacy settings to avoid abuse) that we can view of the players we have interacted with in game, This could include a optional back story page with the players achievements in game, combat and trade skills, Faction alignment, ect... and updated as things happen.

You know what happened in between Star Trek episodes every week? Nothing. Enterprise flew around scanning random planets for cartographic data to sell. Scotty ran around fixing the warp thingamajigger wishing he had a Class A FSD instead. Spock manually keyed mass amounts of Tricorder data into excel spreadsheets, Uhura mostly just listened to the Beastie Boys, and McCoy spent the week treating Kirk for muscle sprains and alien STD's he gathered up the weekend before. No sir, the TV show only gave you the highpoints. They didn't show you Sulu getting drunk in the maintenance closet.

I've seen one of your posts. It was good.

I sort of wish INARA and FDev had a better way of following people.
You have to friend them at the moment like Facebook in the old days.

I use 'friending' on the forums to get the best content in my feed.

If given a choice, I'd rather the orrery come to life.
I really dislike the 2d static system map.

Well...on the other hand anything that makes the system map come up even slower than it already does is going to be a big step backwards...

Are you aware you can create Player Minor Factions (kinda like a clan) that can appear in systems and give out BB missions and grow to take over the system and then start expanding into other systems. The owner of the PMF has a code he can hand out to give other players the TAG for his PMF. You can also submit Galnet Articles for a particular system to details what's going on with your PMF that show up at the local stations for anyone to read and stick around for quite a few weeks. Have you heard of the Pegasi Pirate War going on between the Empire (well Denton Patreus) and Archon Delaine's Kumo Crew? Completely player created and driven by players.
