Are you part of the Elite Dangerous Universe?

Should we have an ingame captains log or not?

It would be a terrible overhead in terms of Moderation, Programming, Legals, Servers, bug chasing.

No moderation needed if these were just logs/notes that are private. They could even be stored player side as simple text files, something I would prefer.

I really don't get why people want everything to be in the HUD.

I want it to be in the game, because I am playing the game and I want it to be linked to the Star map I access in my ship

A CMDR in 3302 would have forums, sites, newsfeeds, all sorts of things available.
On their device/phone/tablet whatever.

Yes, perhaps, but I personally do not own a mobile phone, a tablet or whatever.
If my commander in 3302 owns these things then they should be in the game, because he is the one using them!!
I have this expensive gaming PC with Elite on it and I do not want to have to alt-tab out of the game to access a simple function that could easily be built into the game with a little effort.
I already think it is a shame that ED lacks a ship builder functionality (like Coriolis offers and Elite Shipyards offer) and having to use a captain's log outside of the game would be much worse for me as I will use it very often.

For me there is no out of game.
This post is happening in-game.
My whole browser is dedicated to Elite.

For me there is an out of the game.
This post is happening completely out of the game and it has nothing to do with what I am doing inside of the game.
It is meta communication.
My browser is my browser. It is not the game.

Inara is awesome.

That it is! It absolutely is.
But it is not what I am looking for.
I do not want to tell stories to others.
I do not seek to publicize my logs.
I do not feel the need for others to see me playing the game, or read about it.
I just want to play my game in my home and have a captain's log inside my private game.

Go register an INARA account and write some actual content in your flight log and impress us with what you have to say..

I feel no such desire.
It is fine that you do, but we are not all the same.
My personality has very little need for social interaction and exhibition.
I understand this is different for most humans and I am okay with that.
INARA is useless to me.

If FD implemented what the OP and I wanted you could still continue using INARA.

For the reasons I stated.

My point was that an in-game log would not prevent you from using INARA. It would change nothing for you.
Preventing an in-game log to get implemented would prevent people like me from having one. It changes everything for me.
That was the imbalance I tried to point out.

Another example: I do not care for CQC, Wings and Multicrew (in their pure multiplayer incarnation), but I would never vote against the implementation of these features, because I understand others need such social multiplayer stuff.

My Cmdr has been mentioned in Galnet so that make him canon right?

Yep. It does.

I don't think an on game log is important. Anyone can write a blog from your commanders perspective and post it to the web for free.

But that is not what the OP's proposal is about, so I do not understand what you want to contribute with that remark.
A personal captain's log has nothing to do with an online blog.

But it is what the OP's post is about. The OP asked if we thought there should be a Cmdrs Log. Basically, people are replying that there is a way to have one, several ways in fact. Its outside the game and does not happen automatically, they admit that, but there is a way. Personally, I don't think the In Game Cmdr's Log is a bad idea, I just can't see having it as a priority above other things that are still being developed at this point.

Personally at this point it's development I'd say there's no need for this. There's not enough interaction, persistence and depth to the gameplay or the universe to warrant it. I'd far rather they put dev time into improving the aspects I've mentioned first.

I understood that the OP wanted an in-game captain's log to keep track of his travels, preferably including functionality tied in with the star map..
You made me read the OP's proposal again.
I apparently read into it what I wanted to read into it, because I am a total soloist myself :).
His proposal is indeed much more directed towards certain social aspects that do not interest me whatsoever.

Imho there are several ways already available to generate a captains log, be it public or private.

I would prefer, at this time, the devs to be working on game content and/or bug fixes.

Yeah why not, at least i can write in the log the most interesting systems and so on. In time with the network architecture of ED (imagine for a second few thousands commanders trying to open huge personal logs p), i bet this option will be nerfed or FD will improve the network :D
PS: if you are skeptic about thousands commanders trying to open logs, long time ago in EVE, a players alliance (Goonswarm), used the local chat in game to create huge lag. Usually few hundred commanders try to write in the same time on the local chat. The results, especially for their targets............... usually ended in tears.

Your flight logs are stored in your PC and there are a variety of tools to track them.
Inara has a slightly clunky way of doing it, but it works.
and yeah OP is about more social interaction in game.

The social side - blogging, chat. player Organisation etc should not go in game because of the development and maintenance overheads.
There are excellent sites and tools for communications.

More tabs and menus and panels in game?
Please spare me.

The days of single screens are gone.
If you need social interaction - open a browser.

When end I play elite, my second screen has at least:
AEDC squad board. Teamspeak, Spotify, AEDC forum, Mahon Reddit fortification spreadsheet, FDev forum, eddb.io INARA and whatever links the Teamspeak crew is posting as we play.

Do not bring all this into the game.
