I've been playing since beta and I can now clearly see two groups of people inside the community.

The "play only for fun" group, which believe in the following commandments:

- Missions are not about credits and they shouldn't be
- The game is what you make out of it and doesn't lack content you just have to imagine/RP
- Explorations is not and shouldn't be about credits
- I play for fun not for credits and the game doesn't need balancing

And the common player which isn't so RP connected to the game and instead just want the game to have good game design mechanics to engage gameplay, as the rewards to be balanced across all activities.

So, which one do you fit in?

edit: ok to avoid confusion, if you agree 100% with any of the "Play only for fun" commandments, vote for the first option.

Although I consider playing as entertainment and not a race to the biggest/most I'm not sure I fit into your depiction of a 'only for fun' player. Mostly, I believe the game should have good game design mechanics to engage gameplay across all activities. That sentiment I see as a universal truth. Every type of player wants that. I'm not sure how you can make a distinction separating along these lines.

While i believe that exploration isn't about credits, I don't think that the game doesn't need balancing. Where do i vote in the poll?

I'm sorry, I'm not understanding. Who pays for a game to not have fun? I honestly can't imagine anyone doing anything in a video game without the ultimate goal being having fun in some respect.

I mean, I could imagine a game for life or death not being fun, but that is a bit different... :D

Earning credits IS fun...depending on who you ask.

play ONLY for fun

That's a false dichotomy. Every one of your bullet points encompasses some of us some of the time.

"common player which isn't so RP connected"?? Whiskey Tango.. We ALL want the game to have "good" mechanics, but what qualifies as good varies from person to person. Gather four of us in a room and you could throw a brick and hit five "correct" opinions.

There's only one question. Does one like the game and keep playing it? If so, then your categorization is irrelevant to that player. If not then they have to decide if they dislike it enough to STOP playing.

I would definitley consider myself an only for fun player, but the only parts of that description I can agree with are "I play for fun, not for credits", and "the game is what you make of it".

I certainly don't think the game doesn't lack content or that it doesn't need balancing, or that any activity shouldn't be about credits (they aren't to me, but each to their own). The second description also fits me exactly.

Still, I'll vote fun for president when I get on my computer and can actually vote.

No, I understand that part just fine.

I don't understand what you mean outside of ONLY for fun.

Who honestly does anything that isn't fun, in a video game, on purpose?

I ain't getting paid real money for this..

Everyone plays because it is fun ofc, please pay attention at the word "only".

I'm paying attention to it. I still don't understand what you feel the other 'group' you have identified play for though.

I don't consider myself to be particularly 'role play connected' to the game (not really even sure what exact definition you are assigning to people there though to be honest, what differentiates a player who is 'role play connected' from one who isn't and at what point do they cross the supposed barrier between the two states?) but the only reason I play any game is for fun.

Fun is a subjective concept. I'm sure there are plenty of players who don't undertake any form or group, or even 'internal' roleplay and yet would still consider themselves to be people who play for fun. Perhaps most importantly, I'm also sure that players who are primarily motivated by the acquisition of ships and credits would also consider themselves to be playing for fun because to them, doing those things is fun and is an end in itself.

Ultimately the only thing I do that I don't do for fun is work. I do that for pay so that I can spend the time I'm not there having fun. (Edit: Semi-ninja'd by Monk on that point lol)

Sorry if that sounds like I'm bashing you a bit. I'm not trying to but it's a bit like the 'dad-game' thread the other day which I made a point of staying out of; a fairly pointless discussion because in order to engage with it, I have to first accept that somebody's attempt to categorise players and sort them into two or more boxes is valid. Usually I don't.

I've never understood why so many people seem to find it important to be able to categorise others and sort them into neat piles when the defining attribute of humanity is probably our individuality.

I definitely play for an emphasis on fun. What that means is different than you describe, though. For instance, my main profession is exploration, which I don't do "for the credits", but when I got back from Sag A and cashed in my data for 76 million credits, that was money I was happy to have.

The difference is that I don't do things "for the credits". I won't do any repetitive activity that I'm not immediately enjoying because doing that repetitive activity will earn me more credits than doing something else I find fun.

I guess what I'm getting at is that credits are not my primary motivator in how I choose to spend my in-game time. But the credits should be there.

So for exploration these days we've got planets to explore. I'm finding it fun to explore them, so I spend most of my game time exploring planetary surfaces. Because that's what's fun for me Right Now. Problem is, there's NO credits in it. None at all. And that bothers me. Not looking to get rich, just think if Game Designers were better at their jobs that it wouldn't be this way.

You on the "common player" group

I can see what you're getting at, but your definitions are off target so no vote.
Games that focus only on the game mechanics are generally bad.
Games that pay no attention to game mechanics are generally bad.
