Are you really a pirate?

Hi all,

Just having an interesting PM discussion with another forum member and they happened to make an observation:

"There is no career path in piracy."

I thought about this.... Then I thought about it some more.... Then I looked up the definition of "pirate" in the dictionary:

PIRATE
noun

1. a person who attacks and robs ships at sea.

PIRATE
verb

1. use or reproduce (another's work) for profit without permission, usually in contravention of patent or copyright.

2. rob or plunder (a ship).

I've been attacked in game by NPC pirates and I do recall them demanding I drop my cargo. I've also been attacked by CMDRs in game and I don't ever recall them demanding my cargo. So, does that mean these sold called pirates are NOT pirates, but are in fact, just simple murderers?

Are there any pirates out there that actually make money out of piracy? You know like, stealing cargo and selling it for profit? Or are all CMDR pirates just beating up other ships for the kicks?

Random thought of the day. Discuss. :)

Kind regards, Andrew.

Considering that there isn't anything really worth stealing from players and just about any "lawful" activity in the game can make significantly more money faster...

Are you really a baiter?

I'm not familiar with the term, so I cannot really tell you either way. But I only posted because I thought it was an interesting little discussion and others may want to also discuss.

Am I a baiter? Do I need to up my combat rank to.... Master? :)

Kind regards, A.

Except for the last couple of days, I almost only pirate.

And you can make good money pirating NPC's. I'm using a python, and only choose my targets in low/med sec refinery and extraction systems. Main targets are type-9 and type 7's. Because those ships are slow.

If you get the hang of it, and do everything quick, with the best limpets, you can fill up your cargo bays with expensive materials within 2 or 3 good hits. No buying, just stealing and selling. So almost 100 percent profit.

I do only steal from npc's. Don't like to spoil someone's day.

I would imagine you could make a good few credits by offloading a full Anaconda of gold no? I've never tried piracy, so I wouldn't know.

Player piracy (to make money) has been dead for a long time. When rare trading was really popular after release, the Lave area had quite a few pirates making decent money (for the time) by pirating other players. A dozen things have changed since that era that mostly killed off player piracy, but that isn't worth discussing for the 100th time...it's not going to come back. People still pirate other players some I am sure, but it is much more for the fun/blockading/other RP reasons than actually making any noticeable money.

With the last patch, PvE piracy is at last for once viable as a profession however...from newbies to even billionaires. Not from stalking trade ships though. It's thanks to missions (http://imgur.com/y4hAWIF). Didn't have the reputation for this 20 mil Cr mission unfortunately, but I've taken many 1-8 million Cr pirate missions...probably made around 50 million off of them total since the patch.

I don't want other CMDR's cargo; I normally couldn't even carry it if you dropped it. Why the hell do I want 10 tons of agriculture equipment, or beer? I'll spend more than that on ammo attacking you.

So - I'm not attacking you because I want your cargo. I'm attacking you because I want to fight you, and wish to win the engagement... either by submission, or destruction.

Incoming role-playing nut jobs... in... 3....2....1...

Hello!

Yes, I make quite a bit and I enjoy it too :)
Sometimes I do the Heist missions from the Mission board, sometimes I just roam about and interdict T-class ships to see what they've got.

I gave up on player-piracy last year. Barely profitable and no matter how much effort you put into the roleplay it's rarely reciprocated.

Maybe now we need someone who'll explain how the game is broken, and do it for 50 pages.
Here is a list of keywords, I suggest everyone takes one and comes up with an opinion. After 50 pages we'll swap the keywords and the fun continues:

griefer, pvp, pve, crime & punishment, cheater, menu logging, combat logging, consensual, red pelt, mobius, open, broken, reward, high waking, logout timer, balanced, ethics, NPC wings, psycho, P2P, server, singleplayer offline mode

Some CMDRs are out there to roleplay piracy, others are terrorists that will destroy you for fun, or maybe just want to see you surrender, as well.
The game permits all activities to take place in Open Play, so it's something to be aware of.
Not everyone holds the same ethics or moral code as yourself when it comes to a game, after all.
Personally I don't see any value in PvP that isn't roleplayed, but that's just me and my thing. I'm aware some players will space me if they can, so, if I go to open play, I'm acknowledging that could happen!

The 'red pelt' ... I'm still giggling at that one :D

You forgot 'the furry one' ... xD
