Are you really blocked from gaining further Naval ranks, once you're allied with the major faction?

I've read Yokai's guide, Fenris and more things on Reddit about gaining faction ranks. And mostly, following the advice there works a charm. But I may have overdone it on the reputation missions just before I reached Baron...

Before you jump to any conclusions and rush off to post an answer, please hear me out:

I'm Allied with Empire, had Baron rank for quite some time (like an eternity in terms of the amount of trading, missioning and bounty hunting done.) I reached allied a short time before hitting Baron, but since then, I can't find any empire aligned minor faction that I'm not already allied with.

1) I am aware of the difference between the "allied" standing bestowed by the major faction, that supposedly isn't the "true standing" you have with the minor faction.

The guides tell you to look at the mission turn-in screen to see your *real* standing with the minor faction. But this either stopped working, or I really am allied with all these sub factions, because as soon as I complete a single mission in new stations, the mission turn-in screen does say "allied".

I have no idea if FD may just have changed what gets displayed or if they changed how standing is applied to the sub factions, or if there's still some other screen to look at.

2) Yokai talks about other player's claim that minor factions not aligned with the controlling faction, but the next paragraph immediately contradicts that...

E) It has been surmised by some players that if you do missions for a minor faction that is not aligned with the controlling faction for a station, then you make greater reputation gains both for the minor faction and the associated major faction. Me? I'm not so sure, but I'll throw that out here for consideration. Not really sure how to test the verity of this assertion or not.

F) If you do missions for a MINOR faction that does not also belong to the MAJOR faction you're trying to improve your reputation for, then you will not grow your MAJOR reputation. You should always look closely at the REPUTATION sub-tab of your System window's STATUS tab for every new station before you start pulling missions from the bulletin board. Make sure that you choose missions ONLY from those minor factions that are allied with the major faction you're trying to improve! Any one system typically has a mixture of minor factions from _different_ major factions operating inside of it. Know your factions!

Does anyone have experience with Yokai's paragraph E...?

I searched Google for a list of all Empire aligned minor factions, but came up empty, save for the WIKI page which lists all of 5 Empire aligned factions, so I started my own list in Excel.

Earl again, just hopped from system to system if I thought the rank missions where a bit slow in coming. New system, a couple of mission and along comes the ranking ones.

Arry.

This ^^
Yokai's guide is full of useful data, but I'm not entirely convinced of his theory on the relationship between reputation and rank, and that's not just my perception. I've read it debunked elsewhere that the key is simply running missions: 5-10 for lower ranks and maybe 15-25 for the higher ones to trigger the rank progression mission. Like Micky, I said to hell with developing reputation with lower factions (it seems to trickle down anyway) I've ground out my previous three rank progressions all from one station. What I do agree with entirely, is there's a degree of randomness to it.

Did mine from unfriendly to neutral.

Hmm, makes sense, BUT: I was trading in Federation space for a some time, first SOL and then Wolf something, simply because I could find more profitable routes there at the time, and I got all the way to Post Commander by trading and without even trying, only friendly with the Feds, I had stopped doing missions when I traded my ASP for a T7. With the ASP, I was still picking up some of the larger profit missions, like 'bring us a bunch of "item" and we'll pay you 150,000 or so, I would get those, while still in the ASP.

I suppose when you trade 212 tons at a time, your reputation adds up just enough. The T9 I use in Empire space does a whole other level of that, I guess. Turning in bounties from the fine RES areas in Daii
didn't give me a blue up arrow with anybody either.

The first time I got a red down arrow with the independent "Jet Council" faction (all the pirates were Jet Council ships) but no up arrow for the minor empire faction.

I will try your advice nonetheless and combine it with Falconfly's advice by trying to find a system with a Federal faction I can undermine by supporting the empire faction...

Thank the emperor for docking computers... gives me time to make coffee!

I guess I should load up my T8 with non lethal weapons, medicines and foods and start flying to random systems :p

Honestly, I'd ignore the word "Allied" with the minor factions.

When you hand a mission in look at (assuming your using the standard HUD colours) how much blue (IIRC) has been filled up in the bar.

I was allied with all 3 major factions well before I started actually working on gaining ranks.

Got up to Baron quickly and then seemed to just sit there for ages. Did 8-10 missions in a several systems for one of the more minor factions (still Empire though) rather than the primary faction and suddenly got the rank increase. Once I hit Viscount the remaining ranks came along extremely quickly (at least it felt like they did)

Will get out my ruler and measure my rank in centimeters instead of Elite's adjectives ;-)
