Shouldn't shields prevent paint erosion by zapping the dust? Mine are usually off so it doesn't matter much to me.

Sure, why not? Makes enough sense to me, and I pretty much always use shields anyway.

I'd definitely prefer this over what we have now – roughly 90% of game-play with 0% paint integrity, for me at least.

I remember once someone saying, when asked, that proximity to a star in supercruise also speeds up paint degeneration. If you're scooping and you go over 80% heat, your paint burns off quicker. After hearing that, I spent more time with my heat warning blaring and it sure seemed like I was able to get the paint off quicker, though I accept it could have been in my head and my total time spent in supercruise might have been appropriate to the wear., irrespective of the heat.

Can anyone comment on that, at all?

I rarely get my ships that hot, so not really sure myself. I would suspect that it probably isn't the case though, just because that's an added layer of complexity that I doubt Frontier would bother with. I might very well be wrong though, of course.
