Are you sitting comfortably..? Then I'll begin...

Earlier this evening I took a Navel Ascension Opportunity, inadvisedly I must say. It was to deliver 13 tons of uraninite (stolen). It must have been a slip of the finger because I don't have a clue where to find such a thing. I guess the lure of becoming an Earl (after a long absence of any such missions coming my way) must have overcome my usual caution. Suffice to say I didn't find it (obviously something to learn here. any clues? guidance?).

Ultimately, I'm sort of ashamed to say, I ditched it. Oh, how my rep was diminished! I supposed that I wouldn't get another chance for weeks.

I went back to normal duty - humdrum but you've got to turn a credit. Then the servers started fading in and out. Being a trooper I kept loggin back in, with variable results. Finally I got what seemed a good connection and looked at the bulletin board. Amazingly I was getting another chance. A milk run! Deliver a data package to a neighbouring system!

But!!!! The servers! Down they went, log back on. It's still there, but the deadline's wound down to, like, minimal. I suddenly wondered... is the risk in this actually managing the job despite the outages? Of course I know that's not in the script but it WAS the risk, considering the otherwise trivial nature of the task.

I took it. The server went down. I logged back in - it was still there in my inbox, time-a-ticking.

I got on the case, not only racing against time but also the fragility of our collective infrastructure. Down again. Seriously.

Not to stretch it further I made it. I got the acknowledgement and made the grade with moments to spare. Within seconds of doing so, I lost my connection again. But I'd done it. An entirely different sort of tension but rewarding nevertheless.

You can all call me Earl y'all. I look good in Ermine.

I, like you, decided today to raise my Imperial rank in the hope of raising fed once I'd got to king. Imagine my surprise when, on completion of the missions, both ranks were raising! I reported it on the bug forum and my progress has been rapid (albeit I've had to accept and complete 3 missions per rank to get each Imperial progression). Each one has been posted with the details in the same thread on the bug forum and it seems I'm not the only one. One day of play (minus server problems) has yielded this:

I won't mind if they roll my federal rank back to Post Commander as I've not started my Federal ranks grind yet. It was a surprise I can tell you!

EDIT: I forgot to congratulate you Earl!! :D

You get rep loss for failing/abandoning quests? I never knew that... Would explain why it took so long for me to get my rep up to allied in my home system...

With great rank comes great responsibilities. Humble baron here, content to be what he is. Until they release a ship that requires a higher rank than the Clipper (which, due to squishy-ness and me doing more combat than trading, I don't use anymore.)

Well, there's a chap up there who's a KING for goodness' sake (doffs ermine cap). I expect he's in the market for an Imperial Star Destroyer.

Oh. Wrong space opera.

It wont take you long to be there too (or to Admiral if they don't fix the bug). I didn't even have to move systems for the last 2, they just kept popping up!

For some reason I started giggling as I read "Navel Ascension Opportunity". Were you taking plastic surgery to remove your bellybutton or something? :)

In the future, bellybuttons are able to ascend to different planes of existence. Ahhh...transcendent nave-ana.

+1 for the good story
