Are you upset about the Mobius attack? Are you unhappy about the dev response? Then embrace the Ides of March!

Once again, I am not denying that open has PvP. It does have PvP. A lot of it. But that's it Open HAS PvP. Open does not EQUAL PvP. Sometimes Open = PvP but Open does not have to = PvP. That's why I am saying Open is not PvP. In a PvP game that is the single solitary purpose of the game. In Elite Dangerous it does not. And yes I have played games that offer PvP at times. If Open was a Server it would have PvPvE in the name. It's not one or the other. It's both.

your explanation just tires to defeat the hundrets of existign server definitions thta enarly all MMORPG's use because they wudl then by your logic wrongly label PvP when they would be PVPVE.

PVP simply means PvP is possible and you cannot opt out of it. That is a decsitption for servers since over a decade.

Careful now...

Going to have to pull you up on this. Open is not a PvP mode. Its a common mode where PvEers and PvPers and XYZers can all play together.

Unless you meant CQC, but that's not a mode, its almost a separate game. Its not like you can fly your Clipper in CQC... at least, not yet :D

Now, if FD put a separate mode called Open PvP - then they would have their own mode.

Then that refutes the argument made countless times that if you log into Open you consent to PVP, because if logging into Open means you are consenting to PVP then Open is a PVP mode.

IF I could go into open and have social interaction and not have a player able to fire on me unless say I was flagged for PVP THAN I agree that Open is not a PVP mode.

Open is not PvP Mode. A true PvP game forces PvP upon the user. ie CQC, The Modern Warfare and Black OP series. Open is a space simulation that gives you the option to participate in PvP if you so wish.

Edit

It allows it but is not a prerequisite to participate in open

By your own definition Open is a PVP mode. Unless both parties agree to the PVP than PVP is forced on at least one of the users.

Again I will point out that there are a lot of discussions that state over and over that IF you log into Open you are consenting to PVP.. that to me fully equals PVP.. I can't turn it off. I can't play in open and not deal with it. If I am in open I am subject to PVP whether I want to be or not.. Open does = PVP.

You can't really mean that, can you V?

Yes V could if in the context of coop mode. One of - if not the - biggest problems with Elite is the lack of coop or team play. The current game is simply a free for all where there is an over whelming advantage for strength in numbers, for gangs. Nothing will 'get better' until FDev wakes up and accepts that their experiment (or mistake) of this one PVP-only mode is changed. Expect debate threads like this to simply perpetuate.

MEANWHILE. ...Im always left wondering, why this is such a 'thing' when there's so much else to be doing, other than killing the rarest thing in the galaxy?

Err, where's an Anakin, when you need to bring balance to the force....?

Milky way, calling Anakin!

So, people are surprised that they are playing on the internet, they meet some trolls and they are blaming the devs instead of black listing them?

Well, it can't be as bad as calling a boycott over this.

Sitting here at work, my eyes square with 'spreadsheet fatigue' I needed to focus on something else before my brain resembles the scrambled egg i recall having from breakfast around 6.30 this morning. It's going to be a long long day, and I'll be delighted to get away from the office before midnight.

Anyway, all that misc stuff aside, I can count on the ED forums to be the important distraction I need as a preventative measure against 'switch-off syndrome'.

Reading through the last few pages of replies, it's quite clear that the player base (as I do) see open from different angles. Hold a sheet of paper up, and some see the edge, the 0.002mm thickness looking thin and without substance. Others see the full front of the paper and see a beautiful picture, a work of art. My point being is that you'll never be able to make someone else see what you do, unless you're at similar angles.

Elite Dangerous is basically a 'dump' folks into a big big galaxy full of unknown dangers and limitless opportunities (don't take me literally, as FD are working on this content!).. but you get my jist.

Personally I love Mobius. Not because it detracts from the PvP angle, but because in my heart of hearts, I'm a co-operative person. My mindset is co-operation. Never have I been one to destroy someone elses work, or sabotage something someone else made just because it makes me feel good, or because I like the feeling I made someone else 'cry'. Drop me on a desert island with 50 other people, and I will anchor a team, and ensure the well being and safety of everyone else. I could never be 'that guy' that wants to go and create mayhem and see others struggle. It goes against the grain.

As such, open for me is an arena where you subscribe to being at the mercy of others, others with a conflicting policy over what constitutes 'fun'. I'm not qualified to dictate how others should have 'fun', but I am qualified to dictate what I designate 'fun' and, at the moment, Mobius is the only supporting mode which closest matches my mindset. Now, share that mindset with 21,000 other folks, and you quickly end up with a galaxy that supports each other, where felony is outlawed, and the philosophy of "humans will band together and conquer the final frontier".
I think an undisclosed number of people consider PvE, or "player vs the infinite depth of space" to be challenging enough, without others making it even more difficult.

Obviously I'm on the PvE boat, but others that do focus on PvP (I mean the direct PvP, not indirect like PP for example), and the multitude of variations of PvP from tear extraction, to piracy also need their game. Force feeding PvG (Player vs Galaxy) players to PvPers will not help. Folks on both sides will hate it, they already do hate it, and FD do not cater right now for players on the non-confrontational side.

There's only really three options: 1) Allow player driven groups like Mobius to allow PvP flags, folks not PvP flagged will not take damage from other players. Or simply to remove player damage altogether, that does pose an issue of 'friendly' organised skirmishes. The PvP flag would probably work much more effectively. 2) another option is to have a FD official Player vs Galaxy (PvE) mode, where rules can be enforced 'officially'. 3) OPEN becomes a beacon for all players, but, with the addition of PvP flag on / off toggle, that simply adds non player damage to / from that player after a lengthy timer i.e. 2 minutes or perhaps can only be toggled from within a station (to prevent abuse) PLUS a radar indicator, perhaps a player icon in green or blue for PvP off, and red for pvp flag ON.

Whatever the solution, keeping the haters away from the haters on either side will only be a good thing, even if they're kept apart by an invisible barrier. Negate the hate, and ED becomes a much nicer place.

I needed that outlet, and thanks for reading so patiently! Now back to my financial anaytics. [wacko]

The only ones who love the force feeding are those who claim they are PVPers but only want targets they don't have to fear and can dominate. Then thump their chests and claim how brave they are for PVPing. And from a someone who managed to escape Maintenance Analysis, good luck with the financial analysis ^,^ .
