You need to map the discovery scanner to a fire-group, just as you do with weapons. Then use your primary fire / secondary fire to scan depending on which you mapped it to.

As well as mapping to your Fire Group (right-hand panel), you should also check that you've a) deployed the scanner, try toggling the Square button, and b) go into the Options>Controls and just check that the button for your Primary or Secondary are set to what you thought, lastly c) again in Controls, check that there isn't a specific button map tied to that function e.g. I had inadvertently set a button map to Heat sink and for several days had issues until I found this. It might be any of these, but just a few suggestions. Hope you get sorted soon.

Thankfully Discovery Scanners don't need to be deployed to work

I agree, the ADS has to be but not the DSS. The DSS is basically an optional upgrade to the scanner that comes already preinstalled on every ship. The basic difference in addition to doing more than the stock scanner is the increase in distance from 500 to 1,000.

However, if one wants to utilize it while in an srv which has it own scanner the DSS must be set to a trigger the same as the ADS. For example, when doing scanning planet or cival war planet scans. One must be in a srv, the DSS must be triggered when pointing at the data scanner and then one triggers the srv's scanner. Took me two days of trying at Quince before realizing one needs to sets of triggers, one to activate it and one to scan it. In the process, I lost two days of missions, once I learned and made a few million which took longer than I could have done in the bubble. The missions for planet scanning dropped to almost nothing. So, back to the bubble I went.

So, install an ADS and a DSS. Set them both to a secondary trigger on your ship. And if and when you need them, they'll work as designed. Yes, there expensive and take two slots. But the worth is well worth it and cost will be returned 1000 times or more.

Agreed. ADS & DSS are worth the cost, especially if exploration is your preferred gameplay style. I use both on my Beluga. I also got them grade 5 engineered which means I can scan planets, stars and moons from much further away; a must if you plan on scanning everything as I do. :)

You need to map the discovery scanner to a fire-group, just as you do with weapons. Then use your primary fire / secondary fire to scan depending on which you mapped it to.

Suggest mapping the discovery scanner to a SECONDARY trigger, Just in case you decide to get voice attack and an HCS voice pack which maps the discovery scanner to the secondary trigger by default. o7

Thanks everyone, that worked perfectly. Can't figure out how I missed it, thought I'd tried that before.
Haven't really played much since my post because of work, just a quick 30 minutes.

What I have now come to realise is that the 'not knowing how to use the discovery scanner" doesn't actually fix the problem I find myself in. I'm in unexplored space and I haven't got enough fuel to jump to a station or outpost. I was hoping by using the scanner I could find something in range. How wrong was I?

So my options as I see it are. Fly my Eagle into a sun in a blaze of glory akin to a Disaster Area gig.

Or??????????
