The Romans spoke (Vulgar) Latin and less often Greek. Italian is a softer romance language.

It is modeled on a number of things. Heavy early roman influence but other things as well.
Maybe you need to do a bit of history review.....
After the Roman Empire, the Barbarian invasions began, and then the Middle Ages (Dark Ages).
Hence the Empire of Charlemagne, the Holy Roman Empire.
The EU could draw on this, but the temporal status of the Pope is missing.

More than Rome, we have always thought of the Empire of Charlemagne, the Holy Roman Empire
