I bought it on Steam to try it in VR but haven't booted it yet :-( Do you know of a good getting started guide?
I run a server. I'm based in the US though, not sure how you'd like that ping time.
There isn't really a good starting guide, you just have to dig in and explore. Ark really emphasizes the 'survival' aspect. It's incredibly incredibly unforgiving. Any starting guide worth it's salt will tell you that you're going to die and lose everything you've worked for multiple times a night for several weeks straight before you really get the hang of it. This is a true statement and it sums up Ark pretty well. That said, it's quite the accomplishment when you are - finally - able to survive and start tackling the harder bits of the game. There's a huge distance between start and end so if you like challenge there's a lot of opportunity. Add in multiple maps and the exploration factor goes through the roof.

I ran across this today... is this what you do? Im tempted to give this a go and start my own server.
If this is what you do, can i ask if you have the ability to bar players unless you invite them? I dont want randoms logging on because i appear in some official server list somewhere.

I ran a home server for my family for a while (I don't play the game, but my kids and their mates do). You can put a password on the server so that only the people you give it to can join.
