ArmA 3 Apex, a good MILSIM for the patience gamer.

ArmA 3 just had their released of the Apex version, and even the old campaigns was redone.

What I like about ArmA is that it's more slow paced and also a bit more realistic than other FPS games out there.
The new mechanic in Arma also now take stamina much more into consideration in the vanilla version.

Anyone else play Arma here in the ED community?

I pop into some invade and annex servers occasionally, don't really have time or dedication for proper milsim groups or anything like that.

I like the new version, its kind of satisfying to play a game where you need to plan ahead instead of just run & gun.

What do you mean by 'new version'? It's not like Apex was a massive overhaul. Arma was never a run and gun, ever since Operation Flashpoint.

I know what Arma is, been playing it since flashpoint, Apex is a great overhaul with a lot of changes to the game mechanics.

I've played all version of Op Flash & Arma - but as a single player - so the recent Apex campaign, with no NPC AI slots did nothing for me. I uninstalled to make room on my SSD for Win 10. Will reinstall for sure though (and need to reinstall DayZ standalone too).

Played OF and Arma for years and even made a few missions and it's great. The mission editor looks even easier to use now and you can do a quick 30 min mission with friends if you want or load up something like Domination and play for hours. There's different types of games/missions for everyone really, that's it's strength.

Check out the ACE mod too.

I need to say that I maybe gave the wrong impression. The new Apex Campaign (reamp of the old one) in single player are almost as the old Arma 3 Campaign, however new mechanics have been added. Like stamina, as you can see in the video example there is now a stamina influence on your character. This actually make it a lot harder to aim if you are running and then drop down to aim.

Patrol, has been added, I don't think this was in the first Campaign released in Arma 3. Sound FX has been improved an also some new environment sounds has been added.

To me it has been a great pleasure to replay the campaign in single player mode, because the story is pretty good and the missions are well made with few bugs.

I remember Operation Flashpoint, it was a great story, and for the first time I really like a military sim game because of the way it was kind of open world. Arma 2 and its new Campaigns was also great however its was only in Arma 3 I kind of got the old feeling back and now when I replay the Campaign in the Apex expansion, its just much smoother in the gameplay and how it works.

Stamina was in ArmA since the dawn of times. In fact it was toned down greatly. Before you'd walk 15 meters and your aim was all over the place.
I can't say about singleplayer though. If you are playing ArmA for campaign you're just doing it wrong :D

I play Arma in a group too, the campaign is to me a good way to get some gameplay without all the hustle of waiting for everyone to get a time to play.
But I agree that Arma is best played with friends.

Anyway, the campaigns are pretty fun as I said, the story are pretty good in my opinion.

Stamina in the old Arma was always there, but in the Apex version it has become more of a influence.

I'm an ARMA 3 solo player. Invested since Op Flashpoint days and though I know I may not be getting the most out of it I still love it. Not got Apex yet as the 'campaign' sounds a bit pants for Solo. So will wait for some scenarios to be created and jump in at steam sale time.

Currently LOVING the Pilgrimage Mod. Well worth checking out.

I have not but certainly will do now. I have the extra loveliness of a new PC so visuals are cranked up and I'm loving the long draw distance now.

Thanks for the heads up.

OFP and the Arma series are by far some of the greatest games ever to grace the market. I used to play a lot of twitch games back in the day (no not CoD) like Quake 3, UT and Tribes 2. I was blown away by the sheer ambition and scale of OFP. Tribes 2 had relatively big maps compared to the arena and corridor shooters. OFP took that scale to another level with whole Islands. I was so hooked I played through Cold War Crisis in 2 days.

Playing online back then was a bit of a pain since there was no join in play. You had to join a lobby and then pick your slot and that was it. If you joined mid game you had to wait till the end of the mission. All the hassle was worth it, even the one life and no respawn, if you had a huge group playing coop or pvp.

Coop is where the game shines. If I wasn't returning to Jaques I would crank it up.

Operation Flashpoint cold war crisis remains my joint top shooter of all time (joint with Half life 1) with a great single player campaign (never wanted to do online). As for ArmA, love them all as well, not played for a while, i tend to play xbox with my mates, but just the mention of those military sims brings me great nostalgia (unlike the codemasters spilt disasters that were OFP: Dragon Rising and OFP: Red River.

I spent so many hours playing Arma 2 OA "Bennys Warfare" servers - good times. I have A3 but dont own Apex yet - it looks like a great map.

ArmA has really come along way, I truly enjoy playing that game, also the modeling of the cars and helicopters are very detailed.

I also used to play that a lot, I wonder if I was ever on the same server as you.

I loved Arma2 even with all its quirks, spent many hours on it.

I never quite felt the same about Arma3, it just didnt grab me as much, I would just be happy playing warfare but the last time I played it didnt seem as good as A2
